Science & Technology Winner: Underland

"More than any other genre, in my opinion, science and technology titles can vary dramatically in scope. You can have an entire work dedicated to the life and behavior of earthworms, and then one that spans epochs and discusses broad topics through multiple interdisciplinary lenses.

My pick for best science and technology title of 2019, Underland, falls into the latter. It is an ode to what goes on below, imbued with the poetry of science, mythology, history, and adventure. It covers multiple, seemingly disparate topics quickly and fluidly, and Robert Macfarlane’s unadulterated passion for the subject matter never fails to paint a vivid picture of the complex landscapes he dives into and dissects.

Ultimately, what all of these titles offer is a sense of wonder. They turn their eye towards that which we take for granted, and they are all powerful, exploratory narratives that shake you from your routine by forcing you to find fascination in the commonplace and vast alike." —Michael D., Audible Editor
