The #1 sign for me that I’ve discovered a new favorite book is that I’ll frequently catch myself thinking about it, out of nowhere, long after I’ve finished. And of all the books I listened to this year, Homegoing is the one that has just seemed to linger for me. Yaa Gyasi’s debut is a multigenerational saga that traces the very different lineages of two half-sisters separated at birth in their native Ghana. Listening was like experiencing an engrossing novel, a collection of short stories, and a history lesson all in one. Narrator Dominic Hoffman is a vocal chameleon, shifting from character to character, adapting his tone, accent, and cadence effortlessly. It’s clear that Gyasi has an incredible career ahead of her – one that I’m very keen to follow.
