Plot
Set in the near future amid a cosmic challenge, Project Hail Mary follows Dr. Ryland Grace, a former junior high school science teacher thrust into an interstellar mission. He wakes up on the spaceship Hail Mary to find his crewmates dead and his memory vanished. As Grace gradually realizes, he is Earth’s final hope.
As Grace's memory returns, he discovers Earth faces a threat from Astrophage, an alien microorganism depleting solar energy and risking an ice age. The Tau Ceti system remains unaffected, prompting the Hail Mary's launch. Grace's goal is to understand Tau Ceti’s immunity and find a solution, knowing he cannot return.
The plot develops as Grace encounters Blip-A, a spacecraft from the Eridani system. It is captained by an alien named Rocky, who resembles a metallic, five-limbed creature and communicates through musical tones. Their awkward interaction evolves into a partnership, driven by their shared mission to save their worlds.
The discovery of Taumoeba, an organism preying on Astrophage, promises a solution. However, scientific and situational challenges arise, testing their resolve. Grace faces a dilemma when a malfunction occurs. He decides to aid Rocky, leaving behind the possibility of returning to Earth.
