Plot
Nineteen-year-old Signa Farrow, orphaned as a baby, has been passed between various guardians who were more interested in her wealth than her well-being. Each of these guardians met an untimely end. Now, Signa finds herself living with her last remaining relatives, the Hawthornes, at their gloomy estate called Thorn Grove.
The Hawthorne family is in disarray. The patriarch, Elijah, mourns his late wife Lillian through wild parties and excessive drinking. His son Percy struggles to maintain the family's declining reputation, while daughter Blythe suffers from the same mysterious illness that killed her mother. The situation takes a supernatural turn when Lillian's spirit appears to Signa, claiming she was poisoned.
Realizing that Blythe could be the next victim, Signa decides to investigate the murder. She forms an unlikely alliance with a surly stable boy to hunt down the killer. However, Signa's most powerful ally in solving this mystery turns out to be Death himself—a fascinating and dangerous entity who has always been near her.
As Signa delves deeper into the investigation, she discovers that her connection with Death may be more powerful and irresistible than she ever imagined. Despite her initial hatred for him, Signa finds herself drawn to Death as they work together to uncover the truth behind Lillian's murder and protect the Hawthorne family from further harm.
