Life-long climber, mountaineer and adventurer. Contributor to rock climbing guides to both gritstone and limestone in the English Peak District in the 1960s. A member of the English team that made the first ascent of Norway's Troll Wall, the tallest, steepest North Wall in Europe, simultaneous to the Norwegian first ascent in 1965. Author of Troll Wall, the story of the climb, and of Climbs, Scrambles and Walks in Romsdal where the Troll Wall is located. Did a 1000ml canoe journey through Arctic Canada in 1971 along an almost forgotten Klondyke gold rush trail, the story of which is in Adventures in the Northlands along with other adventures in Greenland, Iceland and Norway. Responsible for the discovery of the climbing and trekking potential of Wadi Rum, Jordan, in 1984 sponsored by Jordan's Tourism Ministry. Climbed and trekked throughout Jordan almost every year since with partner, Di Taylor, writing four guidebooks to climbing, trekking, canyoning and caving with support from H.M Queen Noor (see photo). Initiated and eventually completed exploration of the 650km country length Jordan Trail in 2014, often with like-minded Jordanians, having proposed the idea fifteen years previously. In 2017 we were invited by the recently formed Jordan Trail Association to join the first official through walk of the trail, being thanked for our efforts to explore and promote Jordan's adventure tourism at the official opening and again at the celebratory party at the end by the Red Sea in Aqaba by H.E. Lina Annab, Jordan's Tourism Minister as well as by H.M.Queen Rania who joined to walk part of the trail. In 2023 having been trekking with Ben Hoffler on his Sinai Trail and discussed his idea for a Wadi Rum Trail, we were then in Rum together and with assistance from our Bedouin friends, in particular Sabbah Eid and Sheikh Craim, we created the trail with walking, scrambling, climbing and abseiling and including Jordan's highest summit, Jebel u Adaami before finishing with a crossing of the much more technical Jebel Rum. Other than the recently created Wadi Rum Trail, the story of all these adventures plus others in Nagaland, Bodoland, Madagascar, Sudan and across North Africa and the Middle East are in Quest into the Unknown, published 2019.
