Anthony “Tony” Bonfiglio has always had a knack for telling remarkable stories. Working twenty-one years in the greatest fire department in the world gave him no shortage of material—stories of bravery, humor, triumph, and tragedy.
Tony spent most of his career in a century-old firehouse on 161st Street in Washington Heights, Manhattan. He worked fifteen years with Ladder Company 34, where he started out as a probie in 1983. In 1998, he transferred to Howard Beach, Queens, joining Ladder 173—fondly known as “On Golden Pond.”
Following the tragic events of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Tony hit the tiller button for the last time and officially retired from the FDNY in 2004.
These days, he enjoys a quieter life down the Jersey Shore with his wife of 44 years, Christine. He keeps busy tending his garden, hosting backyard pool parties for friends and family, and occasionally beating the odds at blackjack and roulette in Atlantic City.
