Peter Lazes has worked as an educator, researcher, and consulting for over 45 years encouraging unions and management leaders to create organizational changes to improve the quality of services, control costs, and create meaningful jobs for frontline staff. Modeled after industrial democracy approaches of Scandinavia and socio-technical systems approaches of the Tavistock Institute in the UK, Lazes' work has taken him into hospitals, nursing homes, car assembly plants, shipbuilding, hi-tech firms and textile/garment industries. His research includes looking at how worker participation contributes to civic participation and helps to revitalize unions as well as the outcomes of various worker participation approaches. Working with management and labor leaders, Lazes has helped to establish sustainable change to improve patient care, saved hundreds of jobs of frontline staff, and provided frontline staff the ability to have a voice in decisions that impact their job. Lazes has written over 30 articles and produced videos on topics such as organizational change, innovation and new work systems, new roles for unions, and strategies for keeping American jobs. Peter's international work includes consulting and educational programs in Ireland, Norway, Poland, and the UK. Other activities for Peter include strategic planning for unions, leadership development, breakthrough processes to create integrated delivery systems, methods to encourage employee driven innovation, and creating healthcare learning collaboratives between several healthcare delivery systems to accelerate the spreading of best practices. Peter received his Ph.D. in clinical and industrial psychology from Union Institute and University and a film certificate from NYU. Peter has been on the faculty of 2 medical schools and 5 universities. Lazes is currently working at both a national and local level to ensure that delivery system changes include needed payment incentives. When not in the field, Lazes enjoys a good game of tennis or skiing. He plays multiple reed instruments including the bassoon and various saxes. He lives in West Stockbridge, MA with his wife, Marie Rudden, 2 dogs, 3 horses and a miniature donkey.
