I was born in Los Angeles, a city divided at the time between two primary elites: those with old money (oil) and those with new money (show biz). My education consisted of twelve years of convent school where I learned a great deal about God, religion and human nature, and nothing at all about spirituality or the other subjects at hand. I graduated high school (barely) and set off, traveling and doing a variety of odd jobs, all of them interesting for what they taught me about power dynamics, sexual discrimination and human motivation. At age twenty I moved to Frankfurt, Germany, where I began a career in advertising, moving from there to New York where I became a copywriter. It was the end of a heady era in advertising when it was still possible to travel anywhere in the world on the client's ticket by writing one's location of choice into their ad. It was also a time when sexual harassment was the norm, and one had to learn quickly to deflect it without losing one's job. In my late twenties I met my husband and moved to London where I raised my family, flirted with a nervous breakdown, and continued to write, dabbling in screenplays, none of which was ever produced. In my mid-fifties I decided it was time to do something about my education, or rather lack of, and so I read history, politics and philosophy at Birkbeck. I graduated with a 2.1. Not stellar, but not embarrassing either. I've always loved to read and to write, the latter being a perfect way to while away the time for someone who is essentially a daydreamer. Interviews With An Ape is my first novel.
