I’m that old bloke who needs a haircut, leaning on a lamppost, watching the world go by. Curious. Always curious. Because every picture tells a story.
I didn’t always write. When I was young, I read. I read plenty. Lots of history. Lots of politics. Lots of philosophy. But mainly Agatha Christie and George Orwell. And plays. A passion for Shakespeare and Brecht. Some Neil Simon. Each in their own way understood. Then, swept away by Old Man River, I set out to chase moonbeams and make music. Succour for the soul. A neat guitarist, doubling on sax and flute, I made a decent living before waking up one morning on the other side of the creative fence.
And all the time, I watched, sometimes understanding, often not, but always watching. Curious.
I travelled. I ran a record company, I managed bands and record producers, I built recording studios, I made records. Some sold. Some sold very well and won glittering prizes. Hollow trinkets. The best sold hardly any. But they told a story that needed telling. But when music became a digital commodity to jog to, when music became a digital commodity to commute to, when music became a digital commodity to iron slacks to, I hung up my guitar and turned my mind to committing a lifetime of curiosity to paper. A new passion.
Some of my scribbles sell. Some don’t. But that’s OK. They’re out there. Curious people who watch the world go by will find them. Well, a few might. And a few is plenty. Indeed, one is enough if they understand.
