Dr. Brian Harrison is a specialist in political communication, political behavior and attitude change, experimental design, and LGBT politics. His book "Listen, We Need to Talk: How to Change Attitudes about LGBT Rights" (Oxford University Press) focuses on the impact of individual-level identity on public opinion toward same-sex marriage in the United States. His other work focuses on the impact of identity and elite polarization on individual-level attitude formation, particularly toward U.S. political institutions. He is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Previously, he was Lecturer at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota; Visiting Fellow at Yale University’s Institution for Social and Policy Studie; Affiliated Scholar at New York University; and Visiting Assistant Professor at Wesleyan University. He earned his B.A. in Government from Georgetown University, a master’s degree in communication (public relations and advertising) from DePaul University, and a master’s and Ph.D. in political science from Northwestern University. Brian has won grant funding from the National Science Foundation, University of Michigan, the Time-Sharing Experiments in the Social Sciences, SocialSci.com, the Williams Institute at UCLA Law School, and the MacArthur Foundation. He is an award-winning teacher, having taught at Wesleyan, Georgetown, Northwestern, DePaul, Fairfield, and Loyola University-Chicago. Prior to graduate school, Brian was a White House appointee and also worked in the House of Representatives. In his spare time, Brian enjoys playing the piano and writing music, watching sports and live theater, and spending time with his family and 2 dogs.
