Yoichi Ochiai
Media artist. Born in Tokyo in 1987. He received his Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Information Studies from the University of Tokyo in 2015, as the first early-completion doctorate of its Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies. He is Professor at the University of Tsukuba, where he directs the Research and Development Center for Digital Nature, and holds a cross-appointment as Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo. Active as a media artist since around 2010, he advocates the concept of Digital Nature — a worldview in which computation and nature fuse into an indivisible whole — and works across research in wave control and human–computer interaction, artistic practice in media art, and books that articulate this thought.
His research turns computation directly upon waves and matter: Pixie Dust, which levitates and animates objects in ultrasonic acoustic fields, and Fairy Lights in Femtoseconds, which renders touchable mid-air images with femtosecond lasers, were published at leading venues in computer science including ACM SIGGRAPH and ACM CHI, with related patents in Japan and abroad. As principal investigator of the JST CREST project xDiversity (2017–2023), he led research on the inclusion of bodily diversity through AI and cross-modal technologies and its social implementation; he continues this work as representative director of the xDiversity Association, and serves as principal investigator of the JST FOREST and JST BOOST programs. He has received the Commendation for Science and Technology from Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology three times: the Young Scientists' Prize (2023) for real-world-oriented interaction research based on holography and wave control, the Public Understanding Promotion Category (2025) for the social implementation of xDiversity, and the Development Category (2026) for the development of a transparent caption display.
As Theme Project Producer of Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai (2020–2025), he created null², a Signature Pavilion whose mirrored membrane deforms as if breathing, giving spatial form to the theme "Forging Lives"; the pavilion received the Taipei Design Award Grand Prix (2025) and the Minna no Kenchiku Award ("Everyone's Architecture Award," 2026). He is currently developing the null⁴ project for the International Horticultural Expo 2027 (GREEN×EXPO 2027, Yokohama). He supervises Naturally Digital and Digitally Natural, a permanent exhibition at Miraikan — The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Tokyo, since 2019), and continues an ongoing concert series with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra (since 2018). He has served as Advisor to the President of the University of Tsukuba, as a member of the Cabinet Office's expert committee on the Intellectual Property Strategy Vision, of the Visionary Council of the Moonshot Research and Development Program, and of the working group on Japan's digital reform legislation; he currently sits on the government's expert panel on the fundamental reinforcement of defense capabilities, METI's Industrial Structure Council, and the Cabinet Secretariat's council on social security for all generations. He served as Japan Cultural Envoy of the Agency for Cultural Affairs (FY2020–2021). He is Visiting Professor at Kyoto City University of Arts, Osaka University of Arts, Digital Hollywood University, and Kansai University, and Honorary Visiting Professor at Kanazawa College of Art.
Regarding media art as a vernacular folk craft — a mingei — of Digital Nature, he has held solo exhibitions including Image and Matter (Kuala Lumpur, 2016), Sehnsucht nach Masse (Tokyo, 2019), Ruminant with Passion (Leica Professional Store Tokyo, 2019), Tetralemma of Null: Digital Human After All (Takayama, 2025), and TENSON Heard the Divine Kid's Heading Home? (Kirishima Open-Air Museum, Kagoshima, 2026), and has participated in group exhibitions including AI: More than Human (Barbican Centre, London, 2019) and Antípodas (Sesc Vila Mariana, São Paulo, 2025–26). His photo books include Sehnsucht nach Masse (amana, 2019) and Nami to Kei (KADOKAWA, 2025).
His honors include Super Creator certification in the IPA MITOU Program (2010); selection as a World Economic Forum Global Shaper (2015); the World Technology Award (2015); the Prix Ars Electronica Honorary Mention and the EU STARTS Prize (2016); five Laval Virtual Awards (2014–2017); selection as a Leader of Tomorrow by the St. Gallen Symposium (2017); the SXSW Creative Experience ARROW Award (2019); MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 Japan and PMI Future 50 (2021); and selection as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2022). In 2026 he was invited to the WEF Annual Meeting of the New Champions ("Summer Davos") in Dalian as a Cultural Leader.
His books include Maho no Seiki [The Century of Magic] (PLANETS, 2015), Digital Nature (PLANETS, 2018), Nihon Saiko Senryaku [Japan Revitalization Strategy] (Gentosha, 2018), Hare Tokidoki Leica [Fair, then Partly Leica] (2023), and Matagi Drive (PLANETS, 2026). Under a statement of confronting a materializing computational nature and ruminating on the longing and pathos that dwell between mass and image, he continues to cross freely between research and artistic practice, in pursuit of exploration and expression.
