「無頼派」「新戯作派」の破滅型作家を代表する昭和初期の小説家、太宰治の長編小説。初出は「展望」［1948（昭和23）年］。

1942年（昭和17年）太宰中期の作品で筆が走りまくっていたころの作品です。太平洋戦争さなかの作品ですが、この「水仙」にはほとんど影も見えません。洋画家・林倭衛の夫人だった秋田富子が太宰に送った手紙をヒントに書かれていると言われています。秋田富子さんのお墓は、禅林寺の太宰治の墓の近くにあります。

戦時下で言いたいことは言えず、書きたいことも書けない時代の作品です。太宰にしては歯切れの悪い作品になってしまったことは仕方のないことでしょう。ただ、自分の作品の底に流れるものを太宰はここではっきり言っています。
