Publisher's summary

I first saw the Folk when I was a little boy, when they started appearing in my garden, with their unnatural, cruel beauty and honeyed words and veiled taunts.

I grew up with big green eyes watching me from the forest. Whispers from the trees. Shimmering skin darting between the bushes. Black creatures always lurking in the shadows.

While they were here, I thought nothing of them. It wasn’t until they were gone that I realise it wasn’t…normal.

But it isn’t until I’m twenty-one, when my life is in ruins, that they come back to take me away.

They say I’m not fully mortal. They say I should be among them. The Unseelie Ruler wants me on her land for reasons no one will explain to me, but it’s her aloof, painfully beautiful son who captures my attention and refuses to let go.

The cold, black-eyed assassin prince who strikes fear into the hearts of all Folk. Who I’ve been warned about, repeatedly.

Who watches me always.

I don’t trust the Folk, so I ignore their fearful advice to stay away from him. I ignore all of them except him, despite everything telling me that he can’t be trusted—that he’s just as bad as the rest of them, that he’s playing games with me, the clueless mortal held here against his will.

But I want him.

Mortal Skin is book one in Folk, a m/m fae romance trilogy. It contains explicit sexual content, depictions of violence, and deals with the death of a close family member. This trilogy will follow the same couple who get their HEA eventually, but book one ends on a cliffhanger.

Needs editing

It's an interesting story until the repetitious, drawn out descriptions set in. It could be so much shorter without losing anything. Lily Mayne's Monstrous cycle was at least an original plot for me but I feel like I've read something very similar to the Folk cycle before.

I've listened to so many books narrated by Joel Leslie and now they all sound the same. His emotional span becomes very narrow after a while and most of the time he reads too quickly. Some variations in speed would really help with his interpretation. I always have to decrease the speed control. Thank god for that capacity. Most of the time he just sounds frantic.

I'm interested enough to read the next installment but I expect it will be pretty much the same.

My new go to author

I’ve been awaiting each book in the monstrous series anxiously and now am waiting for the next book in this series just as much. I can’t wait to see where this series is headed and will be watching for anything Lily writes going forward.

Loved!

I adore Lily’s Monstrous series but I think this might be even better. So good! And, as usual, Joel Leslie’s narration is perfect! Use the credit right now!

Lily Mayne + Joel Leslie = Perfection

Yet again, Lily Mayne has hit every emotion inside one book and keeps the surprises coming. Joel Leslie is an amazing narrator that brings this story to life perfectly. What a great team!

Whelp I cried my eyes out and need the next book yesterday

Story starts off with Ash, a young college grad going home to relax and celebrate his birthday, and ends with me, sitting in my living room crying my eyes out at 12:06 AM, after binging this in a single day. So thanks for that Lily Mayne!

Its worth the credit, 100%. If you know this genre, you know whether or not you like Joe Leslie’s narrations. Personally, I thought he did great! Will be ready to cry my heart out again whenever book 2 comes out.

(Please let it be quick because my heart is kind of dying from that cliffhanger)

Loved the story! So creative and intriguing!

I’m sorry this narrator isn’t for me. I was able to focus on the characters and the story, which was excellent. If I hadn’t bought the rest of the series, I’d be reading them instead of listening.

My new obsession!

This was my first book from this author and I will definitely read more from her. I fell in love with the main characters and the story, as soon as this book ended, I got book two and finished it in less than two days. The writing is not perfect, I wish the author will give us more of this world and some side characters are very superficial, but overall, the story is really good.
Joel Leslie is great, but some of the characters voices are down right creepy, so sometimes, I don't know if the character is good or evil. I will definitely continue listening to this series.

good...

it was good but could of been better. I really dislike single pov's when there's more then 1 main character. it feels like half the story was missing. nonstop I kept thinking what the other character was thinking. I also think the character should of been a little smarter. other then that it was a good book. I want to give a lower rate because again I feel like half the story is missing. because of this I don't really want to listen to the second book.
