An enemies-to-lovers lesbian romance about sexy, smart doctors cutting to the heart of what matters.

Skilled surgeon Veronica Mallick runs her London hospital department like she runs her surgeries: with hawkish efficiency. Then her perfect world is turned upside down by the arrival of a new Head of Trauma.

Cassie Taylor is a brash, no-nonsense army surgeon, fresh from the front lines, and trying to find her way in civilian life. She's all action and sharp edges, not too interested in rules. She's even less interested in bureaucracy, or playing nice with her uptight, paper-pushing colleague, Veronica.

While they're circling each other warily at St. Sophia's hospital, Cassie becomes entangled in some shady financial dealings. Their shared search for the truth draws them closer together, sparking heated moments as they try to see justice done. But in exposing a scandal, can they also find some common ground? How will they both deal with being attracted to a woman they don't even like?

No real heat between the two characters unlike the authors other books. Wished for more from these two and the stories around them.

Good, but not exceptional.

Although, as an American, it was sometimes difficult to distinguish the people speaking. I thought that I was used to British accents from the many British TV shows I've watched. So I'm not entirely sure whether it was my listening comprehension or the reader's skills that was the problem.

But I really enjoyed the story.

Great slow burn

A British surgeon slow burn. Major Surgery is a lovely story with an authentic hospital feel.

Fun London medical romance

I had a very specific reason for listening to this book and Lola Keeley did not disappoint.
She dished out a lot more than I was expecting, 🤭 even managed to get a few too many chackles from me.
Great story. Realistic NHS hospital feel, well researched medical terms and references.
Loved it from start to end.
The slow burn romance between the MCs was cute even.. though a bit more intimacy wouldn't have hurt.

Narration, I have a thing for the British accent. I however couldn't help but notice that the characters almost sounded the same, irrespective of their sex.
At some point, I lost track of weather it was Cassie or Veronica speaking.
The men sounded like the ladies too. Is it a British thing???
I think Gabrielle could have done a better job here.

Get this book gays. You'll love it anyway.

A slow burn medical lesbian romance.. very English too. You'll love it.

Not saying it was not a great book, it was, just it took sometimes to get used to the flow of the book. Loved the characters, loved the plot, would have liked to hear about the relationship with the son for example. Some things went missing.... but all in all it was a good book
Narration was fitting.

For this Genre this is a very English book

I read this for the I Heart Sapphic 2025 Reading Challenge for the prompt Medical.

As a rule, I am not a big fan of medical/hospital stories but I love Lola Keeley’s books (she got me to read, and love, a tennis based story and I can’t stand the sport) so I was absolutely willing to try this. Great decision on my part, if I do say so myself.

Quick Thoughts:
- I do love that Lola Keeley’s books are diverse in more than just ethnicity or sexuality but also life experiences. Having all three in her books does makes for interesting characters to read about
- Cassie cracked me up so many times
- This is the first hospital story I’ve read after reading one with zombies and I kept waiting for them to show up. Oops
- I adored the best friend in this book (whose name I’m blanking on right now)
- Normally I’m a little iffy with books that have teenagers (when they aren’t the protagonists of course) in them because they are either short old adults or tall toddlers but the kid in this actually felt like a teenager
- There are two reasons I knocked a star off. One, if I’m going to read an enemies to lovers book, I want to feel like they are actually at odds. This felt like they were just greatly annoyed with each other. Two, the big drama at the end was wrapped up a little too quickly. I would have liked it to be a little more intense
- Gabrielle Baker did a wonderful job narrating this book and I was happy to see that I have a half dozen more books to listen to her read. Score!

Overall I, of course, enjoyed this book. I’ve enjoyed every Lola Keeley book I’ve read. They are such a delight and have wonderful characters. This was so much fun and worth the time to read.

Something so good about Keeley's stories

This was a slow burn, military doctor meets ice queen doctor. Single mom, slow burn, 1 on the spice scale with a HEA.

Intriguing

This storyline was interesting when it came to the MCs because they really didn't like each other but slowly became tolerable then something happens to change their interactions and path to friendship then to like a little more then friends to steamy not as spicy as I would like but over all they over came their differences to successfully and literally tackle an idiot to have a sweet ending. Narration was good with the different character voices especially with the MCs and male voices.

Light with a touch of drama

loved that it was a queer romance that wasn't centered around the queer romance. it wasn't fraught with missed signals or silly misinterpretations.
It had a great story to support the romance.
