Publisher's summary

Love, in a hopeless place.

Two months after a virus took out civilization, Rachel Donnelly is the last living soul in California, as far as she can tell. Until she runs into a Marine sniper, battle-hardened but alive and healthy.

Adam Sanchez would love nothing more than a slamming session of I-can't-believe-we're-alive post-apocalyptic sex in the back of his Hummer. But Rachel's fragility, inexperience-and much younger age-hold him back from exposing her to his raw, aggressive sexuality. If anything, Rachel needs protection. Especially from himself.

As they band together with other survivors to battle feral animals, violent ex-cons, and motorcycle clubs jockeying for power, Rachel grows stronger in mind, body, and spirit-strong enough to give the dangerously sexy Marine what they both crave.

The power of their passion rocks Adam's world, bringing him to his knees-which, he discovers too late, is the worst possible place to be when danger springs from the shadows.

Warning: Contains a sexy Marine, a tattooed ex-con, a girl who blossoms into a sexually assured young woman, laughter despite the pain, m/f/m ménage, hope, love, and more bad language and violence than are strictly necessary.

Obsessed with body style

I really love this story, but the author is really obsessed with the Barbie and Ken version of body style and beauty. And she mentions it in some form in almost every chapter.

I guess only the young and beautiful will survive the end of the world.

The narrator was AWESOME!!!!

Very Timely

Great series, but this one's a bit of a cliffhanger. Can't wait for the rest of the series to be available on audible too.

I love Adam Gold's narration of this book! I love all Michelle Mills reads but his voice was the perfect choice for this. I want more!! when will we get to hear/read everyone else's story?

Loved the story and the narrator

I really enjoy Michelle Mills’ books and was glad to see this on Audible. Hope she does the other books in the series.

Michelle Mills tries contemporary romance (hehee)

Well thought out plot, catastrope romance. Naive young heroine, war weary marine with intense "needs". HEA, but side characters get a cliff hanger.
Narrator was great. Had to get the print versions of the rest of the series, and i rarely do that 😍
If you like MM's other series, you'll probably like this one. Just note, next 2 books in the series are read-only, as of the writing of this review. That's two years+ and counting😑

Do not eat while listening.

between the jump scares and Michele Mills ability to accurately describe the decay process of unenbalmed bodies, (which show up in all the enexpected places) eating is dangerous while listening.
pro's:
ott heros
heroine willing to moved beyond herself imposed boundaries.
a seriously creepy disease, (this was pre covid by 4 years, she did creepy epidemiology without the cdc's help)
a disturbingly accurate portrayl of disaster survivors in a world of no law and a collapsing grid.

cons, its about 50 percent through the book before you realize the repeated phrases such as the end, before, etc, which seem overused are accurate portrayals of how disaster survivors process information in the aftermath of figuring out a new reality. that is their touchpiint.

its the process of moving past survival and into living.

i wanted to hate rhis book, and I will NEVER listen to it again, its too close to what could have happened with Covid. But. i will read book 2 if she ever gets back to it, .

this is what Kit Rocha's world must have looked like at the beginning, before it settled into the new normal.

good

This book is very different from the other books I have read by this author. So I you don't like this you still may like her other works. It is dark there is rape of a known and liked character. All that said I liked this book and would recommend it.
The narrators voice is perfect for this book. He does an excellent job bringing the characters to life.
