Publisher's summary

Jennet Graeme has witnessed terrible tragedy during the many years of strife between the Scots and the English. As Scottish invaders plunder her convent sanctuary, she defiantly resists the blond warrior who claims her as his prize. But his brute strength is overpowering, and Jennet is forced to ride with him through the lawless lands, tending to the wounded, protected and desired by a man she wants to hate but cannot.

Sir Hacon Gillard is moved by Jennet's compassion and mercy. As a loyal knight, he's pledged fealty to his king's command even as he loses his heart to this remarkable woman. He is merciless in combat, but within him burns a spark for something far beyond the heat of battle....

Not ground breaking but still very good

ground breaking? No. Good story with great narration? Yup!!

Hacon was a warring knight of scotland with a conscience. Jennet was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hacon takes Jennet and saves her from a horrible fate although she doesn't seem to know that at first. I love the slow burn of their love and lust. I loved that together with the orphaned baby (forgot his name) they were a ragtag family and didn't even know it. Because this is a historical I wasn't shocked with the "i love him/her but don't want to be the one to tell what's in my heart because I'm not sure what's in his/hers."

Hacon was a strong leading man who wasn't a barbarian in his interactions with Jennet. Jennet was hilariously sharp witted and I adored her spunk. I wish we got to "see" someone put Catherine in her place because she was a mega biotch that needed a good smackdown. I get that she was hurting but good lord woman, grieve and move on and stop making everyone miserable.

story - 3.5
narrator - 4 She was very enjoyable and if I didn't know any better I would have SWORN it was Angela Dawe. Who knows it just may be her under a pseudonym

I fully enjoyed this story!

While it was heavy on the war content, that is a large facet of the story, so I can easily look past it. But the romance, the progression, the events themselves were near perfectly executed. And I'm highly satisfied with the conclusion. I recommend this.

Want more of the Same

I really enjoyed listening. In addition to the excellent narrator, the personalities of the main characters were very engaging. Well written and interesting story, and I wish this was part of a series.

More promised

Loved the story as it is rich with plots, humor, and romance. Eager to know more of some of the interesting side characters. There are hints of more to tell.

Good Book...but...

This narrator is NOT Allison Pike! This narrator is Angela Dawe! The different voices and accents she is able to perform is amazing!
👉🏼 The main female character is able to be manipulated and overturned just by her man kissing her... It's not realistic and not believable at all! Her man can do whatever he wants and get away with anything & can stop an argument just because he kisses her! ITS INSULTING!!!!

An OK Listen

This is not the best book I’ve listened to lately but it definitely is not the worst. It is a little long but the author keeps coming up with battles to make it longer. She does skip ahead once in a while by weeks and months in telling the story so at that point you hurry along. The biggest problem is that the love story is the part of the book that drags and since this is a romance novel, that’s the most important part of the story! Shouldn’t drag. Also, for an intelligent woman Jean doesn’t notice she’s missed her “courses” for 4 months and doesn’t know she is pregnant. C’mon. When you are having sexual encounters that is one of the uppermost things on your mind, especially when you start having symptoms (although except for tiredness her symptoms came a little late but tiredness is well known and should have given her a hint as well as not having her periods.) And it becomes important whether you’re married or not.
Unmarried: Don’t want to get pregnant.
Married: Are we going to have a baby now?
The narrator was Okay but not Great. She’s one of those readers who are English and have a tendency to want to make every sentence a question. She really fights to not do this but you can hear it in her voice. She wants to go up at the end of a sentence. I would listen to this book but it’s not my favorite. Also, I hate the hero’s name but that’s me.

Hacon and Jennet

*****SPOILER ALERT*****

Audible Premium Plus membership borrow. Multiple POV. Standalone. Allison Pike read well and her Scottish and English accents were clear and easy to understand. Content warnings: attempted r@pes; murders; fights; deception.

Sir Hacon Gillard and Jennet Graeme's story begins in 1319. Hacon takes Jennet as plunder when he raided her town. Hacon's nephew saves a baby from the town after he witnessed the baby's mother's murder. Jennet becomes the baby's foster mother and doctor to Hacon's men. Hacon slowly seduces Jennet, gaining her trust and affection while they travel during the Scottish v English conflict. Hacon's enemy lies to their king in an attempt to get revenge but Jennet speaks on Hacon's behalf and saves him.

I'm really enjoying this author's work and am thankful so many of her audiobooks are available in APP. JP

Solid story

Even keel the whole way through, characters and their personalities as well as the story flow were are pretty solid, it wasn’t the best story ever but definitely no where near unsatisfying. Over all I enjoyed it and thank the author for sharing.
