I really liked this story. The story line was good. I really liked how strong the heroine was. She was not whiny, simpering or stupid. Some reviews on..Show More » amazon didn't like the hero. I did. He had some father issues, (his father was a total jerk) but he got past them and was great. There was great dialogue and chemistry between the hero and heroine. Nicely written sex scenes too.
The narration was very good, all the characters had their own distinct voice and she did the men's voices great. I did listen to it on 1.25 speed which made it a perfect speed.
I liked the first book in this series, so I decided to try this 2nd one. Unfortunately, it stalls out early and stays there. Even an array of "oil can..Show More » Harry" villains and attempted murder couldn't give it any ooph. It was also a bore. I got 3/4ths of the way through it before it put me to sleep for the last time.
One issue I can point to is the author's belaboring that the h "couldn't possibly be lusting for a vicar!!!" It was repeated to the point of eye rolling hysteria. At least the hero figured out he didn't want to be a vicar!
The only interesting character was her father, who was suffering the effects of a brain injury, and he couldn't talk. (Maybe that's why I liked him so much!) His suicide attempt was just stupid though. Really, really unbelievable.
Experience tells me that, in the end, the h and H end up together. But in my mind, I've rewritten it so that he quits the church and finds someone, ANYONE else to love -- and I can live with that.
Note to self: Vicars are boring, and so are the girls who lust after them. (And Jane Charles is not a safe bet.)
Setting: England, December 1813 Genre: Romance This novella is part of the Tenacious Trents series. Lady Madeline is visiting one of her b..Show More »rothers and his wife, along with another brother and their mom. She hears, by accident, that the marriage between her parents wasn't legal. She goes for a walk to think about the ramifications of her being a bastard. Meanwhile, the snow has delayed Lachlan Grant, the Marquess of Brachton, from going to Scotland. His intention is to go to Edinburgh to find a Scottish lass to marry, then go on to spend the rest of the holiday with his family. Madeline wanders onto Lachlan's land and falls through the ice on his lake. He saves her, carries her inside, undresses her (and dresses her in a nightshirt), and warms her - by getting into bed with her. When she introduces herself as Maddie (because she assumes she is no longer a Lady) and says she was traveling with Jordan Trent, Lachlan assumes she is Jordan's mistress. He knew Jordan at school, and they always competed over women. So, how far will Lachlan go with "Jordan's mistress"? What will happen when her family finds her at his home, where the only other people are his valet and cook? This was a sweet, entertaining story. The characters and plot were well-rounded and it felt complete. Jane Charles has a true talent for the novella. I've read/listened to other novellas she wrote and was very satisfied. Narration is great, because Marian Hussey.
Loved this book. I really liked Jordan Trent's character. He was hot, sexy, and smart. I really liked Audrey's character as well, she was smart and st..Show More »rong, not wimpy and simpering. There was great sexual chemistry and a nicely written sex scenes. Lots of great dialogue. A fun story line and plot. Some crazy people, a bit of mystery and murder. This was a fun story to read\listen to.
The narrator was just great. All the characters had their own distinct voices, and she did the men's voices really well. I like Marian Hussey as a narrator.
