The overall story and naration was quite good, I like the retrieval artist novels so took a chance. The characters are nice and if you're looking for ..Show More »some adventure you'll find it.
What makes me stop at three out of five is the weird choice of driving part of the plot with very advanced interstellar and then limiting 'dives' by running out of air in 60 minutes. Even today's EVAs on ISS and Shuttle missions last for 7 or 8 hours. All in all, it feels like the book was written while learning to scuba dive.
I've listened to 20+ scifi books on Audible and this is only the second that I could not finish. I'm a big fan of Rusch's other works (particularly ..Show More »the Retrieval Artist series), but this book has been a disappointment . The main character is VERY irritating which is only made worse by the fact that most of the story is written in first person. The narrator actually does a good job of portraying the quirky antisocial characteristics of the protagonist (which in some ways is unfortunate).
I do like the premise of "archaeology in space" and there is considerable potential for this to be a great series (assuming the protagonist is replaced). If you like this genre, check out Jack McDevitt's books as the concept is similar but the characters are more relatable.
The storyline was easy to follow - and complicated at the same time. It was read excellent and kept me listening as much and often I could, just so I ..Show More »could get the next bit and the next bit and..
I abandoned this book after a few chapters because the Narrator did such a lack luster reading that I could not pay attention. The characters are new..Show More », as is the setting. That would be OK if the Narration was even acceptable. I am surprised that this reading of the book was released. A computer voice synthesizer would have done a better job. I urge Audible to do some quality control with books like this. If I can't return it, I feel cheated. Free is the only price I would be willing to pay for such an inferior product. I bought it at the end of a series and I won't be alone in realizing that as a stand alone book, this reading only sells because people like the series and assume that the quality will continue. Please don't use sales techniques like that. My time and money are valuable to me.
