I've read the paperback edition of this book many times but Simon Vance narrates very well and captures the cheeky, elegant character of Lestat very well and brings out some subtleties that I've missed before.

This novel stands alone very well if you haven't read the other Anne Rice books since it only makes a few references to Interview with the Vampire.

I hope Audible will release more unabridged Anne Rice books (The Mayfair Witch novels!).

I was a big big Anne Rice fan when the books originally come out. Loved them then. Didn't love them nearly as much now. Why not? Because I'd forgotten..Show More » how preachy the author is. Forgotten the long philosophical diatribes.

The narration is a bit flat. A better narrator might have made a difference. All in all, it was a curiously flat listen. I am not entirely sure why. Maybe a combination of factors. If I could have given this a 3-1/2 stars, I would have.

Sequentially, this comes after "Interview" and "Vampire Lestat." This is my favorite of that trilogy and has the most complex characters and plot. If you have been awaiting unabridged audio versions of these books, these are worth listening to, but not as good as I hoped. Maybe I've been spoiled by Kim Harrison.

It is still, I think, worth the time to give this and the other two a listen. This was one of the important "foundation" books for the urban vampire genre, even if they seem a bit stilted by current standards. Bear with the preaching. Although it is sometimes grating, Anne Rice does make some good points, whether or not you agree with her.

I just couldn't get excited about the books because the narrator sounds so bored. He reads with no expression and a draggy, monotone voice, that just makes me not want to listen.

Anne Rice is my version of fast food literature. Always tasty and probably a little bad for the soul, but entirely enjoyable!

Rice is a master of prose, weaving a dark tale of adventurous, personal torment interspersed with hope, light and laughter. I believe this book to be among her best works and look forward to the next in the series with her two new characters, Quinn and Mona.

The plot seemed to drag and rush simultaneously - too much time spent here and not enough there. The narrator, David Pittu, rendered wonderful performances for the male characters of the story; however, the female characters were diminished by his unmistakably male voice. I look forward to Anne Rice's future works centered on "those who walk in the light."
