This amusing mystery has just enough bite to keep it from being too cosy. In fact, the plot revolves around the war between the cosy mystery, as repr..Show More »esented by the redoubtable Agatha Christie and the hardboiled, but not challenging, i.e. Mickey Spillane. It's a frolic through Dame Agatha's works, including some lesser known surprises, at a convention lauding her. The characters, although not deep, are also not stereotyped, with the exception of the heroine's somewhat boringly perfect husband. But ignore Max--all too easy to do--and you'll enjoy this frothy, but not fluffy novel. Okay, I guessed the killer half-way through the book, but still had fun. And who doesn't enjoy Christie Redux?

The only trouble with the audio version is that you want a pen and paper to write down all the mystery authors and books that she mentions.

The voices of many of the characters in this audible version are so poorly done that I found it hard to get past them and lose myself in the story. Th..Show More »e absolutely worst is Max Darling. I know it's difficult for a female narrator to do male voices, but she made Max sound old, supercilious, and completely out of character. He's supposed to be a cool, young guy and he sounded anything but. The story itself was entertaining although I felt certain of the murderer's identity early on and I prefer a plot that keeps me guessing until the end.

I want to preface this review by saying that I've NEVER written a negative review for any book I've ordered from Audible over the years. I've enjoyed..Show More » most of them throughly.

Frankly, I don't know exactly how this book ends...I don't even know what happens in the middle...The narrator is so horrible that you almost cannot believe the annoyance you'll feel at the vocal pacing, the world's worst southern accents, and the absolutely freakish way she pronounces some of these words. NO ONE talks like this, and you'll not get through the first chapter before you'll hear exactly what I'm talking about. I found myself shouting at her--and so disconnected from the story that I couldn't ditch this book fast enough. I felt foolish for having such strong feelings about a book (and a person I've never met)...but the reality is, you're looking to spend about $20, and 8 hours of your life with this person, supposedly entertaining yourself--if the narrator is so bad that you become angry, you should RUN AWAY-- what a waste of money and time.

I love Death on Demand mysteries. I read as soon as they come out. So glad they are on audible. Kate Reading is a good narrator. Always a surprise..Show More » at the end.
