I read this book years ago and while I remembered it fondly, I was a little reluctant to get the audio version. I am so glad I indulged and I just 3 ..Show More »hours into listening, I knew I'd purchase book 2.
Sasha is a psy who has been taught that emotion leads to madness in people who have psychic abilities. Their people have trained themselves to block out all emotions to avoid the emotions that could lead to violence. Such apathy leads each individual psy to be physically separate, even avoiding touch. Sasha's mother is a powerful member of the psy council and Sasha is expected to be a perfect psy. Unfortunately for Sasha, she has emotions.
Lucas is a member of the changeling society and he was raised with deep, protective emotions for his family and clan. The changelings can't imagine how a society as insular as the psy can function; the changelings' biggest strength is that they are not alone. The changelings use touch to affirm their relationships and for comfort and play.
I love how the relationship between these two builds and how the author builds the psy and changeling societies. Each society is distinct and hints of a long, rich history.
This is a romance, so expect explicit sex scenes. I have listened to romances where I cringed at the language and had to fast forward past the scene, but this book never made me do that. I also like that while this book is the first in a series, it also works as a stand-alone book and doesn't leave the listener at a cliff hanger.
I would if they are interested in the series. But not if they wanted to just read this book alone. It is a good as a stepping stone book. It is necess..Show More »ary for the series to continue but, not as a read only book. I thought the characters were written and described beautifully along with the clever wit but, i wasn't as impressed with the books as i was with the others.
I gotta say it's hard to top Judd and Brenna but this book almost does it. You have to wonder with the leopards and the wolves playing nice, if any o..Show More »f them will hook up? I absolutely LOVE this coupling. Alpha Male and an Alpha Female fighting for who is more dominant? Yum!
Riley is Hawk's second, and you will know him from Book 3. Mercy is one of Lucas's Lieutenants and is in the midst of realizing there aren't many men higher ranked than her in her pack. To make matters worse, her Alpha grandmother sends her two of her own alpha-types to flirt and see if anything comes of it. That one night where she scratched an itch with Riley simply wasn't enough, though.
Most of Singh's books are formulaic but this one starts off with a fun romp in the woods and the addiction it creates. Oh the angst. The snarling. It's all so good. 5 stars.
After reading some of the negative reviews about his book, I was apprehensive about this title, but I'm committed to the series, and so there was no w..Show More »ay around reading it. I'm glad I did read it, because I really enjoyed it.
In the psy changling world, there are three main "races": the psy, the changlings, and humans. The author has pair them up in several combinations, and granted, some work better than others. However, I enjoyed the combination of a female who has spent her life inside the psy net, free of emotion, while the hero has spent his life as part of a group of outsiders who can feel emotions.
For those of you following the series closely, this book gives a first person account (in the form of a mother's journal written for her son) of how silence came to be among the psy, and how a group of those who opposed silence broke away and formed their own enclaves, later assimilating with the human and changeling populations, passing an altered version of their psy genetics down through the generations. In "real time" many of the recipients of these genes aren't even aware that they carry them.
The hero, Dev, is the leader of the Shine foundation, whose objective is to track down children with psy DNA and teach them how to handle their gifts. Consequently, we learn more about some of the special children in this book, and that's a big bonus.
I really felt the relationship between Dev and Katya. I felt his struggle between doing the "right thing" and doing what his heart was telling him to do. I felt the horror of Katya's experiences with Ming, I felt Dev's guilt over holding Katya prisoner, but I could also understand his reasons for doing so (Katya, incidentally, understood why he did it as well). If anything, the conflict that threatened to keep the two lovers apart was more believable in this book than it was in most of the previous books.
If I have one complaint, it is the same as other reviewers have mentioned: the author didn't expand on Dev's power with metal. I thought that was going somewhere, or perhaps would show up in a final showdown, but no such luck. I will reserve judgement on that though, because there are still more books in the series that I haven't read, and perhaps we will see more of it then.
The narrator did a great job with the material. I enjoyed her interpretation of the work very much. She has read the whole series thus far, and I like the continuity. Her voice is like that of an old friends by now, and at this point I don't think another reader could do it justice.
This being the 8th installation of the Psy-Changeling series, I thought I'd gotten a handle on what "But he/she was Psy" meant. This time I was total..Show More »ly lost. This time, the actual drama around the love story was more interesting than the love story. They went from strangers to 60 in no time flat. They totally skipped into the realm of love and possession and the "Psy" issues they had to work around never realy connected. I actually found myself looking forward to other characters coming into play because I just couldn't get into the two of them.
Having said that, I believe they will be very useful in the next books. I'm sure their skills wil be very interesting put to use to help the others. Perhaps, we'll learn more about Max's father and get a better understanding of him.
Okay so Indigo is only 4 years older than Andrew, but in her opinion you'd think that gap was wider. So this book has that younger-man-seeks-older-wo..Show More »man tone throughout, including the playfulness of the young male hot for teacher.
This one is one of my favorites, ranking in the upper half of the series. Indigo is a lot like Mercy (from book 6) in that she's a lone female in the upper ranks and has no male in sight. Andrew is a laid-back tracker outside the ranking system and that has Indigo completely confused, especially since she trained him once upon a time. Finally, a book where the guy isn't all stalker and has a more playful attitude. Get it now.
WOW!!! Hawke and Sienna's book was GRRRreat!!! That is one big,BAD,hunky wolf!!!(and a cute little Psy). I have always loved Nalini's books and just k..Show More »now a copy of one format or another, be it paperback, hardcover and now Audio, will automatically find it's way into my shopping cart somewhere on the World Wide Web! This Psy-Changeling series has had me enthralled since the first chapter of the first book. When I first read the back of Slave To Sensation,it reminded me (sort of) of the movie Equilibrium staring Christian Bale(one of my favorite movies), with the no emotion thing. I find the Psy world very interesting, but no touching?? PLEASE......I couldn't live like that, so can I live with either the SnowDancer or DarkRiver pack? I don't care which one, just give me those skin privileges!!! Anyway...I love that Hawke and Sienna finally get their book. Sienna sure did grow up on us, and in a good way.I can hardly wait to see where Nalini takes the series from here.
Since this is a review for the audio format...I think that Angela Dawe has settled into the books. By that I mean that in the first book she read of this series, she sounded a little stiff and read a bit too fast. Now she, in my opinion, seems to understand the characters more and, for me, the book flows better than the first 2. It is my understanding that books 3-9 will be coming out on audio in the very near future and also read by Angela Dawe. I hope she does as good of a job with those as she has with Kiss Of Snow.
Final thoughts: The Psy-Changeling series is a MUST for paranormal romance fans. However.....start with book 1 and read them in order (the ones in the anthologies don't effect the storyline in the full novels, so you can skip those, but who would want to?)
Wonderful job Nalini. I wish you could make it to South Florida sometime. I would live to meet you in person!!!
I have to say that Angela Dawe is a wonderful narrator and that I'm so happy she's been the reader for the complete series. She's accentuated this gre..Show More »at series with her narration style of distinct voices and emotional nuances that truly bring the characters to life. I can't say enough about Angela's style and performances!
Another totally fabulous book in the Psy-Changeling series, I do think this was my very favorite book in this series..I loved the story of Vasic and w..Show More »as thrill she gave us readers/listeners a more closer look into this very humble, soft spoken man. Excellent!
The story by Nalini Singh is as good as I have come to expect from her. Entertaining and fast moving. Normally, I enjoy Angela Dawes' narration. H..Show More »owever, in this book, when Ms Dawes was doing narration, the volume on her mike was at peak level. But when she moved into dialog, she not only spoke in a very soft voice, but it sounded as if the volume on her mike was turned down to almost nothing. I had to adjust the volume at every change just to hear what the dialog was, then turn it down so I didn't blast my eardrums at the narration. This should have been fixed in the edit room. Totally unacceptable for an audio book.
Great short stories to be added to the Psy-changling series. Of course I hope you read the other books first but here is some info on the stories. I..Show More » added how long each book is because sometimes that factures into what I listen to by how much time I have. Don't want to start something really good right before the weekend starts.
Beat of Temptation. Nate and Tamsyn's prequel story, I was glad they included this story on audible. They are the foundation couple in all of the other stories. 2h 42m.
Stroke of Enticement. Annie and Zach story is written after Hostage to Pleasure. I don't think this couple is in any of the other stories, but I may be wrong. 2h 38m.
Declaration of Courtship. Cooper and Grace's story, read after Tangle of Need. 3h 27m.
Texture of Intimacy. Warren and Lara's story, got to love these two. Read after Kiss of Snow. 2h 54m.
