The novel is a good novel, albeit it starts off a bit slowly and predictively. But once it gets off, it is quite interesting, with Skullduggery Pleas..Show More »ant providing a lot of smart remarks and replies. It almost feels like you are reading a movie script rather than a novel with the amount of action involved.
On the good side, it has quite a few twists and turns, and the writer has used a lot of formulae (but not often used ones). The only criticism is that, it uses about the "true name" and "taken name" concept which has been mentioned in quite a few novels, whether it is Eragon series or Barthemeus the djinn's serries.
Apart from that, its a good read if you like Buffy the Vampire slayer type stuff (with a bit more humour and wit).
I absolutely loved this book and became irate when I found out that there isn't a sequal yet! I listened to it 2 times straight through! We have 6 ki..Show More »ds and I am going to pass it on to the next one in line! They are anxious to hear it because it is all I have talked about for the last week. It opened up a whole new world just like the Artimus Fowl series did for me. The two main characters are full of life, intrigue, and a twist of humor. This is a must for any avid young adult mystery and magic listener.
Well written, fast paced ... but extremely violent
I really enjoy these type of YA books on my long commute and after listening to the first one I really liked the world, albeit not a very deeply drawn..Show More » world. The narrator captures the personalities of all the characters extremely well and even pulls off a very good american accent for Saguine.
It is full of action and adventure - but it turns violent quickly and horrifically. The reader is not spared any detail including blood, gore and even death. Now this doesn't bother me as an adult listener but I would caution parents wanting to use this book on a road trip. Unless you have a van load of 12 year old boys - it might be too graphic.
Overall I enjoyed it and would buy the next in the series, but parents be forewarned.
The saga of Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain continues with edge-of-your seat suspense and unexpected twists and turns. This book is an excellen..Show More »t addition to the series. While it's true that this narrator fails to live up to the standards of Rupert Degas, he still does a creditable job portraying the various characters. In all fairness, no new narrator could replace Rupert Degas and the deadpan delivery that made Skulduggery Pleasant into the interesting character we knew and loved. I also miss the amusing sound effects and music of the earlier books. It seems that, like the Harry Potter series, as Valkyrie gets older, the story gets darker. I look forward to the next installment in the series.
This books lacks the humour found in the earlier novels and in the last third of the book, there is too much violence and death. The characters are i..Show More »n a constant search for more powerful weapons with which to solve problems. I will continue with the series.
