July 30, 1945 - The USS Indianapolis and its 1,196-man crew is making its way toward a small island in the South Pacific. The ship is sailing unescorted, assured by headquarters the waters are safe. It is midnight, and Marine Edgar Harrell and several others have sacked out on deck rather than spend the night in their hot and muggy quarters below. Fresh off a top-secret mission to deliver uranium for the atomic bombs that would ultimately end World War II, they are unaware their ship is being watched.

The screams...the grisly sound effects...the rumbling organ music. Sounds in the dark come strange, mysterious, and terrifying in 21 episodes of such classic series as Lights Out, Inner Sanctum, Suspense, and many more. Spine-chilling tales by Edgar Allan Poe, Guy de Maupassant, Arch Oboler, Robert A. Arthur, David Kogan, and Alonzo Deen Cole dabble in dark realms. Boris Karloff, Maurice Tarplin, Paul McGrath, and Bernard Lenrow deliver pulse-pounding performances.

David Edgar is among the UK’s leading contemporary dramatists, well known for his powerful plays chronicling Britain's changing political landscape over the past 50 years. More than 60 of his original plays, adaptations and translations have been performed around the world, and in 2023 he was honoured with a Writers’ Guild Outstanding Contribution award for his service to British playwriting. This radio anthology contains some of his most notable work.

Originally produced at the National Theatre in 2005, David Edgar's play is set against the background of a riot in the fictional northern town of Wyverdale, in the early part of the 21st century. In a revised version for radio, Edgar offers a powerful combination of political and personal drama.
