Publisher's summary

Most of us believe when we're depressed that our situation is hopeless. That's a mistake, Dr. Elisha Goldstein reassures us in Uncovering Happiness. The secret to overcoming depression and uncovering happiness is in harnessing our brain's own natural antidepressant power and ultimately creating a more resilient antidepressant brain. Uncovering Happiness is grounded in two key foundations - mindfulness and self-compassion - and backed by recent scientific discoveries.

New research shows that mindfulness reduces the risk of relapse in people who have experienced depression and can be a significant alternative or supplement to medication. Goldstein explores our natural antidepressants - along with mindfulness and self-compassion, also purpose, play, and confidence - and offers specific techniques for putting them into action. Together these elements can transform something that typically forces us to spiral downward and turn it into an upward spiral of self-worth and resiliency.

A true gem in the rough

I found this book to be highly informative and well written. I've listened to books about happiness, mindfulness, and the phycology behind it all, but this book is (in my opinion) the overall best at identifying the balance between mind, body and happiness.

Great book, but focused on depression.

Would you listen to Uncovering Happiness again? Why?

Yes. If I found myself significantly depressed for an extended time, I think this would be very helpful. And perhaps again. There are many tools in this book that can be used by all.

Any additional comments?

This book is very good, but I was looking for something a little more mainstream, meaning something for people not constantly in the throes of depression. This book leaned too heavily on being depressed for what I was looking for. However, it's still a fantastic book and would highly recommend it.

Clear & Concise - Forward Moving

What did you love best about Uncovering Happiness?

The author's earnestness was what I appreciated most. He shares just enough of his own experience as well as his expertise without overdoing it (like some!). He goes on to share some very practical and simple steps to work toward a more centered existence as well as providing a lot of (presumably) free resources.

Great book, terrible narrator

This is a fantastic guide to understanding what is happening in our brains when we are struggling with depression and specific tasks to heal and prevent relapse.

The narrator is a terrible fit for the book. He sounds like a combination of a robot and an infomercial voice over. To choose such an emotionless narration for a book that emphasizes emotional connection and self-compassion was a terrible idea.
