Publisher's summary

Inventive and heart-racing, this fierce, feminist teen fantasy from debut author Bree Barton explores a dark kingdom in which only women can possess magic - and every woman is suspected of having it.

Fans of Leigh Bardugo and Laini Taylor won't want to miss this gorgeously written, bold novel, the first in the Heart of Thorns trilogy.

In the ancient river kingdom, where touch is a battlefield and bodies the instruments of war, Mia Rose has pledged her life to hunting Gwyrach: women who can manipulate flesh, bones, breath, and blood. The same women who killed her mother without a single scratch.

But when Mia's father announces an alliance with the royal family, she is forced to trade in her knives and trousers for a sumptuous silk gown. Determined to forge her own path forward, Mia plots a daring escape, but could never predict the greatest betrayal of all: her own body. Mia possesses the very magic she has sworn to destroy.

Now, as she untangles the secrets of her past, Mia must learn to trust her heart...even if it kills her.

Feminist fairy tale for the ears

Am I allowed to review my own book? Devon Sorvari is an INCREDIBLE narrator, and she took what I'd put on paper and made it ten times better with her talent. Loved the flourish and flair she gave to each character and the way she lent her voice to this story. I'd give her ten stars if I could!

conflicting feelings

Till the last few chapters of this book I was resigned that I had no interest in reading the second book but with a cliff hanger like that I am curious to know what happens next. The story itself is interesting, it just drags out forever with a whole bunch of information that seems completely unnecessary. The feminism in the story is sorta played out, the story feels very done before and played out until the last few chapters where it suprises you(or at least it did me). The narrator was alright too, I would set it to read at 1.25 speed or 1.3 otherwise she talks painfully slow. Moral of the story: I am intrigued to see what happens next but disnt necessarily think the story was all that amazing. Hence conflicted feelings.
