Life gets complicated when Death gets involved.

To be born into a family of royal assassins pretty much guarantees that your life is going to be...rather unusual. Especially if, like Miscellaneous 'Lanie' Stones, you also have a vicious allergy to all forms of violence and bloodshed, and an uncanny affinity for bringing the dead back to life. To make matters worse, family debt looms—a debt that will have to be paid sooner rather than later if Lanie and her sister are to retain ownership of the ancestral seat, Stones Manor. Lanie finds herself courted and threatened by powerful parties who would love to use her worryingly intimate relationship with the goddess of death for their own nefarious ends. But the goddess has other plans....

This story made me so happy!

Refreshingly free of cynicism and disillusion. I loved the positive, compassionate, empowered take on the traditional swashbuckling good vs evil plot. I loved the characters as I came to know them. I loved the emotionally mature choices they helped each other make. I loved the creative details (I am studying the passage describing the festival finery for Halloween costume ideas). I also loved how it was read and performed; I snorted and cried and trembled along. I want to read everything by CSE Cooney!

A BEAUTIFUL, DEAD HUG!

Well. I am currently making peanut stew and sobbing into it because I just finished listening to this book.

I WANT ANOTHER ONE.

It wraps up perfectly, but also leaves room for further adventures, and geez and louise, I want more.

If you are in the mood for a book that has murder, revenge, necromancy, hilarity, heart, hella worldbuilding, and a goddamned gorgeous sense of (hard won) joy, TRY THIS ONE. Especially in audio. The author reads the book herself and is effin’ fantastic.

Seriously. Now my stew is boiling and I need to get back to it, but I wanted to tell other people to read this book first.

Death and Delight

I bought this on a whim, and am so glad I did. These characters stole my heart, and the world building is phenomenal. Never have I found death so beautiful and comforting, or gods so appealing. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Delightful

This book didn’t have many reviews so I was a bit hesitant to buy it. I’m so glad I did. It was hard to stop listening to and I was really disappointed when it was over. It’s worth spending a credit on! It is lgbtqia+ and poly friendly.

Great Start of a Series!!!

This was a great read. Even better that the author does the audible so you get their inflections of their writing. Loved every part and can't wait to get her next book. Wrapped great and no major cliff hangers that some authors do. A must read and am loving this new author and can't wait for more of her books to be published.

Fascinating world building

Normally I avoid books read by the author because they are often not well done but this is an exception. The author is a fantastic narrator with many distinctive voices and accents. The magic system is interesting and the characters are compelling. There are some difficult scenes but the book ends on a happy note. There is quite a bit of descriptions of blood, death, murder, and wounds but I did not find any of it too graphic and it very much fits into the world building. The emotional wounds were much harder to listen to than the physical ones. But there is also a lot of love in the book (friends, family, romantic) and I found it hard to stop listening because I wanted to know the next part of the story. While I liked the book I prefer more lighthearted fare. I will be interested to see what the author writes next.

Such a cool world!

I will read anything C. S. E. Cooney writes! The world of Saint Death’s Daughter is so cool and colorful and intricate! I loved the focus on found family and working within and around constraints. Lanie Stones is such a fun character to follow on her journey! I really hope there will be more books featuring her! The author does a fantastic job narrating, too!
