I died for Hostess cupcakes.

I know. Tragic, right? Even worse, after I came back, I still didn't get any cupcakes.

What I did get, however, is a six-foot-something reaper with eyes like blue fire to guide me into the world of the supernatural. Which, as it turned out, wasn't quite like the fairy tales little girls are told growing up.

Not only is magic real, more importantly, so are monsters. And apparently, I'm one of them.

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. You see, four years ago, I left my hometown and swore to never come back.

Now, my brother is dead, and I have no choice but to go searching for answers. Except finding them isn't easy when the secret society he belonged to is covering it up. I have to find out who killed him while watching my own back, because if I'm not careful, I might be next - and this time, there's no do-over. Luckily for me, Mr. Single and Hot as F--k is determined to help me keep my ass alive.

The story was really good and easy to fall into. What I didn't like was how she couldn't lie well. If that's the case, she can omit truth or deflect decently. For example when the sheep was about to be tossed in the fire, she could have said it's not your business instead of admitting what it was or how she got it. She could have said it was a gift from someone you wouldn't really know. Lastly she could have left that door open when she first got there and saw what was going on. Great story overall though.

This is my second series by Kel Carpenter and I found it very enjoyable and entertaining. Holly Jackson's southern accent was perfect for her characters. I liked the "becoming a Reaper" origin story and the fact that she has a lot to learn about the supernatural.
I look forward to the next book.

The story was a good story, with the usual cliffhanger for the next book. I found the southern twang of the voice actor very distracting. I don't plan to continue this series.

Enjoyed this narration and story. Does end on a cliffhanger but worth a listen if you aren’t looking for spice.

I liked the story overall minus a few frustrating parts and left questions. The characters are strong and unfolding with the town providing ample evolution for this tale and others. Ends on a sensible cliffhanger as odd as that sounds; finality that leaves you wanting one more sugary treat like a hostess cupcake (wink). I’ll be listening to the second book and not regretting that choice as the story and dialogue are playful and quirky with a slow burn.
