The instant New York Times best seller

A practical guide to taking control of your mental health for today, tomorrow, and the days after, from the number one New York Times best-selling author and beloved entertainer.

"There’s a moment at the end of every day, where the world falls away and you are left alone with your thoughts. A reckoning, when the things you have been pushing to the background, come forward and demand your attention."

Written by Daniel Howell, in consultation with a qualified psychologist, in an entertaining and personal way from the perspective of someone who has been through it all — this no-nonsense book gives you the tools to understand your mind so you can be in control and really live. Created with exclusive audio features, it is split into three chapters for each stage of the journey:

  • This Night - how to get through your toughest moments and be prepared to face anything.
  • Tomorrow - small steps to change your thoughts and actions with a big impact on your life.
  • The Days After - help to look after yourself in the long term and not just survive, but thrive.

You will laugh and learn — but most of all, this book will assure you that even in your darkest times, there is always hope.

You will get through this night.

Educational, funny and empowering all at once

Between the easy categorization for referencing and the humor the author puts into his narration this audiobook is the easiest listen for bettering your mental health I've ever found. Absorbing the information is effortless, everything is scientifically backed and it applies to anyone from the severely mentally ill to those thriving. Truly recommend this to everyone because everyone can benefit from it - if you don't need help correcting things you will inevitably need help maintaining them through life's ups and downs. Thanks to the author for making me feel a little better :)

Wonderful Organization!

One of my biggest issues with mental health books is that the author drones on about their own personal experiences which are so unique to them its hard to find anything within that helps a larger audience. This book does not do that. It is wonderfully organized and set up to be able to find the information you need right away without having to search through the entire thing wondering “wait where is the help?” Daniel Howell’s personal story is brief or sprinkled throughout as a means of providing an example for a particular piece of science or info to better understand it and make the content easily digestible! Overall I would recommend this book to anyone possibly struggling with the their mental health, or to someone who wants to develop a better understanding of it in general. The audio bonus content was great too!

Zazzy

I love Dan Howell, I’ve followed his YouTube career ever since Tyler Oakley did his first collab with him (The one before keyword “whisk”). Dan is so much more intelligent then he leads on in his internet career, and I do fully believe that ever since his coming out video he has blossomed into his own black beautiful butterfly. (Im imaging his wings would be the iconic ikea plaid blanket)
This book was so inspiring and Im so going to recommend it to some of my coworkers who know what YouTubers are, and my mother.
I have no other words other than Zazzy. Zazzy Daniel Howell. Zazzy.

Very Good Book, and Only One of Two Flaws is Fatal

Of all the books on depression I’ve read, this one is likely the most accessible. It’s funny in places and obviously the author is speaking from his own experience. A lot of these books are written by people who have only read about depression, but this one stands apart. I highly recommend Howell’s book, although it has two significant flaws. First, some of the science is outdated, especially in relation to drug treatments. No mention is made of the countless studies of placebo effects and antidepressants. For most people, Tic Tacs are equally effective. But more seriously, there is a constant implication that you, no matter how depressed, can pull yourself up by the bootstraps. The author never addresses the common use of the word “can’t,” as in “I can’t answer the phone, I can’t open the mail, I can’t leave the house, I can’t….” The official description is catatonic.

Here’s a brief excerpt labeled Functional Consequences of Major Depressive Disorder from The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, the assessment and classification tool of the American Psychiatric Association, which should be addressed in this book:

Many of the functional consequences of major depressive disorder derive from individual symptoms. Impairment can be very mild, such that many of those who interact with the affected individual are unaware of depressive symptoms. Impairment may, however, range to complete incapacity such that the depressed individual is unable to attend to basic self-care needs or is mute or catatonic. Among individuals seen in general medical settings, those with major depressive disorder have more pain and physical illness and greater decreases in physical, social, and role functioning.

Genuinely helpful

I only read/listened to this because I am a fan of Dan’s work, but this book was genuinely so helpful that I want to show it to as many people in my life as I can. I wasn’t expecting to learn as much as I did. Also beautifully narrated of course lol.
