Publisher's summary

Erika T. Wurth's White Horse is a gritty, vibrant debut novel about an Indigenous woman who must face her past when she discovers a bracelet haunted by her mother’s spirit.

Some people are haunted in more ways than one.

Kari James, Urban Native, is a fan of heavy metal, ripped jeans, Stephen King novels, and dive bars. She spends most of her time at her favorite spot in Denver, the White Horse. When her cousin Debby finds an old family bracelet that once belonged to Kari’s mother, it inadvertently calls up both her mother’s ghost and a monstrous entity, and her willful ignorance about her past is no longer sustainable…

Haunted by visions of her mother and hunted by this mysterious creature, Kari must search for what happened to her mother all those years ago. Her father, permanently disabled from a car crash, can’t help her. Her Auntie Squeaker seems to know something but isn’t eager to give it all up at once. Debby’s anxious to help, but her controlling husband keeps getting in the way. Kari’s journey toward a truth long denied by both her family and law enforcement forces her to confront her dysfunctional relationships, thoughts about a friend she lost in childhood, and her desire for the one thing she’s always wanted but could never have.

Critic reviews

"Gritty, haunting, understated, and beautiful." —CrimeReads

"Wurth. . . draws on her own upbringing to bring a raw realism to her depictions of urban Indigenous life in the West. You won't find anything else like it this fall." Seattle Times

“It’s metal to the end, it’s Denver to the core, it’s Native without trying, there’s ghosts, there’s blood, there’s roller coasters, and there’s about a thousand cigarettes smoked. What else can you ask for in a novel?” —Stephen Graham Jones, author of The Only Good Indians

A Real Indigenous story of an urban native

The narrator seems to have a native accent. It is amazing to hear and read a piece from our own people.

A Must Listen!!

"Life isn't any happily ever after, it's work every single day for what you want."

Heavy metal, dive bars, and dark secrets abound in this badass new-wave horror story!! Absolutely fell in love with Kari and her plight, this one was a slow burn and so, so worth it!

Highly recommend

I liked the mystery and vivid story! Also really fun if you’ve spent time in Denver, because so many local landmarks are part of the story!

Beautiful, haunting.

As a lover of horror this captivated me throughout, spooked me, warmed my heart, and kept me guessing the whole time. As a native to Denver... Absolutely perfect... I have stepped foot at one time or another in every single location mentioned within the story and felt like this is a true love letter to the city while being a tragically beautiful tale of familial trauma and searching for oneself. Absolutely recommend.

Gripping Supernatural Mystery

The protagonist is a compelling and relatable character, and I enjoyed going on this journey with her. That said, there might be less scares than you're expecting from a conventional horror novel, and the plot leans more in the direction of intrigue and mystery with a paranormal backdrop. There's more emphasis on metaphorical monsters than literal ones.

The climax could have been set up a little better, but it wasn't ruined. Overall the journey had a satisfying conclusion, with surprising themes. If you want an exploration of grief, legacy, and forgiveness, this is your book.

A Haunting Story That Uncovers Beautiful Layers

Im dedicated to a few horror writers but saw Erika on a panel of horror writers and decided to listen to this new author before committing to reading it. I'm so glad that I gave it a chance! Her book is so layered and the details are evocative of the culture, time, and memories conveyed. I absolutely love her writing. The MC wit was charming and real. One of my favorite parts was her description of the Stanley Hotel. It's now a place I want to visit. I HIGHLY recommend this novel and will be buying the printed version to reread.
