Publisher's summary

“Lengard is a secret government facility for extraordinary people,” they told me.

I believed them. That was my mistake.

There isn’t anyone else in the world like me.

I’m different. I’m an anomaly. I’m a monster.

For two years, six months, fourteen days, eleven hours and sixteen minutes, Subject Six-Eight-Four - ‘Jane Doe’ - has been locked away and experimented on, without uttering a single word.

As Jane’s resolve begins to crack under the influence of her new - and unexpectedly kind - evaluator, she uncovers the truth about Lengard’s mysterious ‘program’, discovering that her own secret is at the heart of a sinister plot...and one wrong move, one wrong word, could change the world.

This will be a Hollywood movie one day!

I really liked this (YA) novel. Given the succes of other novel-to-movie adaptations, I can see this being a big winner, (akin Hunger Games, Divergent, Ender's Game, Twilight, Maze Runner etc.).

However, that will depend on the scriptwriters and director, picking up the books arguable shortfalls, given the intended YA audience.

I don't really know what's missing as the overall plot is believable, just predictable. It lacks grit and substance.

For example, inferred pivotal moments which should be captivating and engrossing, were often vague and disjointed. What feels like critical elements seem implausible, cringeworthy or at least dubious.

Characters seem superficial, bland and unrelatable. I don't really feel a connection and find I crave something horrid to happen to a significant character that will irrevocably alter expectations.

Perhaps, though I'm Australian, I hate our accent, especially in audiobooks. We sound awful! I wouldn't be surprised if future adaptation(s) are set elsewhere (ie. North America, or utilise American actors).

At the same time, I'm exceptionally proud of this Aussie author. This is one of her many fantastic series. (Oxymoron or I'm just a moron, you decide!)

All that being said, I really liked this book and can't wait to continue the series.

Note: This book is intended for YA audience, so please disregard the above comments as necessary! Though, I did try to take this into consideration. Whilst I have not been a "youth" for a very long time, I enjoy (& seek) many YA novels from all genres, for my own listening entertainment and to recommend to my own YA children.

So, just to reiterate, I really did enjoy this book. I hope you do too!

Good, but missing something.

I enjoyed this book but there were a few scenes that were just told in the aftermath that deserved full chapters. I feel like a second perspective from Ward or Kale would have made this book even better.

Engaging

Engaging story line. Does a good job keeping you interested without revealing too much- and in to second book.

Similar story line to other books. People w power test teens w special abilities. Who are the hood guys and who are the bad?

Excellent book, fantastic narrator

I am very choosy about my narrators. To the point that there are few I truly like. I would listen to Tamala Shelton narrate anything. Her voice is soothing, nicely paced, and she reads different characters without the awkwardness that generally comes from playing multiple genders.

The story itself does start a little slow, but it's worth the wait. It was captivating, and I was truly disappointed when the book ended...until I realized there's another one! :). While it is a YA book, for sure, it's a good one. I highly recommend.

Not at all what I expected

I was intrigued in the beginning. I had no idea what to expect but what happened was far from my imagination. Great narrator.

It started slow, but wow

6 words. This needs to be a movie. The story was slow to begin but there was just enough to keep me curious. Then questions started to get answered and I was eyeing the last chapter like it was coming way too fast. Turn out to be a great story and excellent narration. Looking forward to the next book.
