Publisher's summary

From an author who Stephen King calls “an absolute master” comes a “heart-clutching psychological thriller” (People) about a young female police officer facing danger on all fronts—from a clever victim of abuse, skeptical colleagues on the force, and even her own father.

Philomena McCarthy is an ambitious police officer with the elite Metropolitan Police in London, responding to a domestic violence call. Tempe Brown is a bloodied young woman and the mistress of a decorated and intimidating London detective, Darren Goodall. Philomena and Tempe strike up a tentative friendship, determined to protect each other from Goodall, but something isn’t quite right about the stories Tempe tells and the secrets she keeps. Yet the young officer is drawn into Tempe’s world, unsure of what is real or invented. After a bungled break-in and an unsolved murder, Philomena finds herself trapped—with her career, her impending wedding, and her very survival in doubt.

Robotham’s brilliant ability to render complex characters, both good and bad, keeps readers unsure of whom to trust, “maintain[ing] an air of excruciating suspense” (The Washington Post)—until the very last page.

Critic reviews

"Sobey portrays Phil with equal parts pathos and ambition. She varies accents, which makes the secondary characters sound distinct and compelling. Humorous moments crackle with life, while violent confrontations simmer with tension. Sobey's performance elevates the story’s suspense and memorable lead character." (AudioFile Magazine)

Thought I figured it out …. I was wrong.

I don’t understand some of the negative reviews. The ending was great. Loved the narration!

Ok!

Imo, not really worth the credit. I COULD put it down. Narration was spot on, story was just OK. That's about all I can say to describe it.....Eh 🤷‍♀️

Cliché

This book has a decent plot line but it becomes predictable and annoying, as the main character seems unbelievably blind to the obvious. I’m all for a strong female protagonist, but at least give her a brain! Then, as usual, the police are the bad guys. Every book published now has any type of authority figure, whether it’s a teacher, parent or police officer, be the villain. Enough already.

Robotham does it again

This is at least the eighth book of the author I have read. I love his story construction. Mystery is an art form he has mastered.

Not his best work

I have listened to all of Robotham's books. There was only one before this that I couldn't make it through and was really surprised because they are all so compelling. This book was okay, but there were too many loose plot points that a good editor could have helped tighten up. Like how do you cut your father's family completely out of your life for 9 years and then suddenly, all is forgiven and everyone is perfectly fine with each other?
He is a better writer than this.

Best author ever!

I’ve enjoyed and recommended this author to other who use audible and this might have been his best! I was thrilled to see he had a new one out. I read one reviewer that found it boring!? Guys crazy it was exciting until the end when all the threads came together!

Another masterpiece

Michael Robotham never disappoints. This novel with a new protagonist ranks up there with his prior excellent novels. I can see Philomena McCarthy becoming a repeat character in subsequent novels.
