Publisher's summary

In this moving short tale of one girl’s search for her lost brother, award-winning author Esi Edugyan offers a vivid, unique perspective on a lesser-known corner of the West African slave trade.

At a fort in Cabo Vermelho in 1779, Sisi, a West African girl with a gift for languages, works as a translator for her English enslavers. She was separated from her younger brother after they were kidnapped from their village by the ahosi, fierce female warriors who serve a neighboring king—and her guilt over her failure to protect him has never left her. When unexpected news reaches the fort, Sisi must find her voice, for her brother’s sake and for her own.

Esi Edugyan’s We Are Bone and Earth is part of A Point in Time, a transporting collection of stories about the pivotal moments, past and present, that change lives. Read or listen to each immersive story in a single sitting.

Wonderful Surprise

This was a free short story on audible I downloaded as a pack of MANY quite some time ago! I can't recall all of the books I've read thus far and I still have a handful left but I'm pretty certain that if this isn't my favorite of them all it must be close to the very top! I rarely give a 5-star rating at all and in all 3 categories, I don't recall the last time I've done that. An author's book must meet some pretty high expectations I have to receive these ratings.

Esi Edugyan is a fantastic writer! She hooks the reader from the very start, captivates your attention throughout the entire book, and adds enough of a mixture of history with fiction through her tale of a guilt-ridden older sister in search of her younger brother after they had both had been kidnapped at a young age in Africa in the early 1700's. It is tasteful told sparing the reader any horrific torturous details yet in enough detail the picture is clear enough you fully understand what was happening to these children.

This was simply a tasty morsel. it felt like chapter 1. I'll need to check out and see if there is a follow-up to this and also what else she has written.

I definitely recommend this book! 👍

Well-written story

This was an exceptional read. The novella was fascinating as well. This author was not known to me. You better believe I will be reading her previously written work. This story and the characters will stay with me. I would listen to this narration again. The narrator, Liz Femi, did a superb job. Thank you to these very talented women.

Enslaved

I really enjoyed the narration and found the descriptive prose engaging. It's always good to learn more about topics that we are uncomfortable with.
