Publisher's summary

An intergalactic luxury cruise to a distant port is a world unto itself in this piercing short mystery by #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth.

Traveling faster than light, the transport ship Redundancy is cut off from communication as effectively as an ancient ocean liner. The isolation suits crew member Ace Vance just fine—she’s got nowhere else to be. But when a wealthy passenger turns up dead during a routine voyage, Ace will have to connect with the passengers and crew to uncover the truth. Tragedy will strike again—it’s only a matter of time.

Veronica Roth’s Void is part of The Far Reaches, a collection of science-fiction stories that stretch the imagination and open the heart. They can be read or listened to in one sitting.

A Space Mystery

I'm not a big fan of the mystery genre but I found this short story to be somewhat intriguing. Of course, the scifi element helped a lot. It's definitely well written but it felt like it was lacking a little something more. Still, it works for a short scifi mystery. I'm now interested in reading some of the author's novel length works.

An interesting murder mystery in space

Void is the short story submission by Veronica Roth for the Far Reaches collection. Occurring in the void of space travel between planets, Void is as much a murder mystery as it is an examination of humankind in space. Ms. Roth's story also explores the phenomenon of time dilation and its impact on the human experience. Between its emptiness and the time dilation, space is one scary space. But, one can find solace in the fact that no matter where they happen to be, humans will always be humans. Ms. Roth's Void may not be as sobering as some of the other stories in the Far Reaches collection, but it does make you look at space as something other than the next frontier to overcome.

Great short story, great narration!

I really enjoyed the plot of this story, just enough intrigue and space-science to make it interesting, but not so much to make it tedious. The narrator does a great job with the character voices and makes the story easy to follow and a pleasure to listen to.

Interesting...

This was an interesting story but, having read other superb works by this author, a small bit disapointing...

divergent path to the stars.

Void (The Far Reaches, #2)
by Veronica Roth
The Divergent author brings another thrilling and well constructed story to life. The idea that interspace travel will cause many personal and political problems for the travelers is an interesting concept. Also the relative time dilation is a problem for the crew and passengers on these extended lifetime trips. The concept that you would miss out on social changes, political changes, wars, and upheavals because of extended time dilation makes this book very comprehensive even in its short pages. The concept of a mystery on an apolitical transport also heightens the tension to the reader.

A really quick, but good, whodunnit

I find it difficult to rate short stories. There is often just not enough to get a true feel for characters or the stories often seem too abrupt or disjointed.

I did not feel that with this one. I enjoyed the characters, the storyline, and felt like it gave me everything I could ask for in a story.

When a murder occurs during an intergalactic voyage, a crew member takes it upon herself to investigate. She is determined to find out the truth and follows any lead she can find, ether it points to fellow crew members or the rich passengers aboard the vessel.

While there were no big surprises, I felt like the story was well written and kept my interest easily. There were plenty of characters that look suspicious, interesting leads for the crew member to follow, and a good wrap-up of the story.

I’d recommend this to anyone that enjoys a quick whodunnit with both a setting and characters that can keep you engaged. I really enjoyed it and feel that it deserves a five star rating, which I don’t often give to short stories.
