Would you kill to protect your family?

Working on death row is far from Kristy Tucker's dream, but she is grateful for a job that allows her to support her son and ailing father.

When she meets Lance Dobson, Kristy begins to imagine a different kind of future. But after their wedding, she finds herself serving her own life sentence - one of abuse and constant terror.

Now she must decide whether she'll risk everything to protect her family. Does she have what it takes to commit the perfect crime?

Very Good book

This is a very good book and reads almost like a true crime doc. It is not a thriller or action packed with skeleton jumping out of closets. It is an honest straight forward book about life and death and the decisions made to get there. If you like true crime you will like this. If you like edgy, tense, and bare souls this is for you.

It’s not about a twist or surprise ending, it’s about the journey to get there, a walk through one persons world.

A beautiful story about family and trial

The narration was a beautiful compliment to this somber and suspenseful story. This book shares practical lessons, that your closest supporters can feel so distant while your biggest threat stays close and friendly.

Great book! Great narrator! Not-so-great ending.

This narrator had me on the edge of my seat for hours at a time while I blew through this audio in two days. The meat of the story is SO interesting and she had a way of building up the tension the entire time. I had expectations as to what might happen next based on her level of intensity.....but the bite was not as good as the bark. Especially at the end. Build, build, build, build..... then bubkis. The female character also was rather annoying--flipping from strong and determined one minute to a weak welcome mat the next. The exhilarating moments--and there were a lot--never produced a punch. Not even the ending, which everything she and an inmate talked about should have brought a brilliant conclusion, didn't.

“Till we meet again”. And I’m crying.

Kristy Tucker works for the Texas Department of Corrections in Public Relations/Information and works with a lot of deathrow inmates.
She got pregnant while young, ended up as single mother and her career allowed her to take care of her family; ensure her son Ryan had everything he needed to have open doors in life.

After an altercation, she meets Lance Dobson; The man Ryan secretly trained martial arts with.
He charms his way into their lives - it’s a good ol’ romance story. They get married.

Only it wasn’t a romance; shortly after their wedding, Lance’s true nature as abusive, manipulative and violent control freak shows. He is holding Kristy hostage with his abuse while playing perfect world with everybody else.
Gradually, she becomes more and more desperate - she has to keep up a happy, loving front with everyone, for fear of putting her son and her dad in danger.
Everyone but Clifton Harris, a deathrow inmate who gradually evolves into a friend. He sees the signs that she isn’t okay and allows her to open up, sowing the seeds for her to finally find her way out of this mess.

The story had me on my toes and a rollercoaster of emotion most of the time. Except for sometime close toward the end when there are a couple of “really?” Moments - but they don’t really detract much from the story at all in the grand scheme of things.

Therese Plummer does an amazing job in her narration - and her dialogue, the portrayal of unfolding relations, emotions, mental states - are simply amazing in their nuance and expression. Despair, hate, pride, innocent happiness, love, abuse, fake happiness with a tinge of real struggle underneath - you get all that and more

Hang in there!

This book started off very slow. I felt it was a bit cheesy and amateurishly written. I was actually going to quit listening and move on to the the next book in my library but I’m glad I didn’t. It got much better and I couldn’t stop listening. Definitely recommend!
