Publisher's summary

The ultimate book-lover's fantasy, featuring a young scholar with the power to bring literary characters into the world, for fans of The Magicians, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, and The Invisible Library.

For his entire life, Charley Sutherland has concealed a magical ability he can't quite control: He can bring characters from books into the real world. His older brother, Rob - a young lawyer with a normal house, a normal fiancee, and an utterly normal life - hopes that this strange family secret will disappear with disuse, and he will be discharged from his life's duty of protecting Charley and the real world from each other. But then, literary characters start causing trouble in their city, making threats about destroying the world...and for once, it isn't Charley's doing.

There's someone else who shares his powers. It's up to Charley and a reluctant Rob to stop them, before these characters tear apart the fabric of reality.

An inversion on Thursday Next

Fun but mostly serious trip through the notions of what would happen if literary characters could be “read into” real life by their most devoted readers, and also an exploration of what it means to be family, even with members quite different from ourselves. Narrator is really above and beyond, expected to cover characters from various continents and eras — one of the best I’ve heard. Worth the time for any lover of books and language!

Wonderful

What a lovely story. Something different and rare. Literary analysis sounds boring but turned into a great plot with great characters.

One of the best books ever!

This book is a delight from start to finish! The characters are wonderful, and the author fleshes out Dickens in a perfect way. The story has a fabulous collection of characters that you can relate to in a literary and an ordinary slice of life sense, the ending is, of course, happy, and all around the story gives you a great sense of hope

Wonderful

I am a 62 year old woman who majored in English and then became an attorney and I have always been a voracious reader. I thought this book was absolutely wonderful.

Exciting, Heartwarming, and Fun

The idea behind this book was so amazing, just an absolutely wonderful story on its own. I constantly felt like we were nearing the climax even when I was less than halfway through it. I had to keep listening, I just couldn’t help it! I even sped it up to 1.4x just because I was so excited to see what was going to happen. Several fun twists and turns, mind blowing reveals, and a truly heartwarming story of two brothers made it impossible to stop this audiobook. I had so much fun in this world.

And I have to mention the writing, the imagery, every word selected perfectly to fit the situation. Wonderful. The narration was excellent too. Changes in pitch, cadence, and accent were distinct enough to immediately know who was speaking in the moment.

Best listen in a while

This book was so good. I think I’m going to have to read some Dickens books.

Love, Love, Love This Book.

The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep is one of the most original books I've read or listened to in years! The story line had some necessary predictability about it as how else were you going to have a crisis without an arch villian who wants to rewrite the world order? Beyond that the story is fresh, surprising & keeps you guessing. The bond & sibling revelry between Charlie & his brother was realistic & drove the brothers to make bad choices. Both characters in very human ways tried to keep things from each other as well as others they love in their lives. As often happens in life this almost created calamity & heartbreak. I highly recommend this book!
