Not your typical CIA operative

I found this story good. Dugan is an unlikely hero who finds himself in bad situations. I thought the narration was good. Lots of accents and most were good. Worth the time.

LOVED THIS SET OF AWESOME BOOKS

This set of books got my attention because my father’s name was Thomas Dugan. So I was curious what the books were about. I was drawn in right away. Loved the action parts - love parts - mystery parts - and the constant intrigue in his stories. Mr. McDermott is a great writer and I can’t believe this is the first time I have listened to his writing. But most of all I loved the narrator Todd Haberkorn. He has an amazing skill of making
Characters In a book come to life. His different accents of the different characters was amazing. How he could switch back-and-forth between the different accents of the characters really made the stories come to life. I highly recommend these three books but that there is a lot of adult language and situations in the books. Definitely not suitable for anyone under 18.

Terrorism, Piracy and Sex Trafficking

I started listening to R.E. McDermott with his post-apocalyptic series, the "Complete Disruption Series" narrated by Kevin Pierce, rightfully known as the voice of apocalyptic fiction. I'd never heard an apocalyptic storyline from a merchant Marine's viewpoint, so it was fresh, exciting and very informative. I decided to continue with the Tom Dugan Omnibus.

Todd Haberkorn's narration of these exciting, action-filled stories definitely did not disappoint!! He handled accents from America, Britain, Japan, Russian and Somalia with ease. Great Job!!

Starting with "Deadly Straits" we meet Tom Dugan, a wealthy American ex-pat shipping magnate with CIA connections and his beleaguered, equally wealthy British best friend Alex Kairouz. Alex's young daughter Cassie is being used to force Kairouz into letting his shipping business be used as a front for terrorism. Dugan's determination to help his friend brings him into a relationship with MI5's Anna Walsh. The second in the series is "Deadly Coast" involving Somali piracy and chemical warfare. The finale is "Deadly Crossing" about sex trafficking, Russian mobsters and family-style relationship with former Spetznaz soldiers Borgdanov and Denosovitch.

In each story, Dugan's extensive knowledge and experience in shipping, heart to help and acquisition of friends willing to work together as a team is the framework. Dugan's seemingly blind trust in law enforcement and willingness to let Anna run things in spite of clear Corruption within her colleagues is by turns endearing and extremely frustrating. By the end of the second story it's clear that Dugan should have engaged in some kind of arms training, but he didn't. Nor has he stepped up to the plate in his relationship with Anna, as someone who knows he's always willing to get personally involved should have done. Thankfully Borgdanov calls him on it! I'd like to see the story branch off with Borgdanov and Denosovitch as lead characters while still calling on Dugan to help them. Nigel, Cassie and Karina could also be further developed in any further branching of the story. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I wasn't more

McDermott is an excellent story teller and to anyone who's read his other works shouldn't find it surprising that this one involves ships and boats and ordinary people thrust into extraordinary events.

I liked the narration and accents and voices used to differentiate the different characters. while it's not a deal breaker, it is annoying sometimes when all the characters are voiced the same way

Oil tankers, pirates, bioweapons, sex slaves

Todd Haberkorn does a wonderful job with all the voices and accents, (American, British, Irish, Russian, German, Somali, etc) very believable. He does mispronounce a few words ("stuart" for "steward"), but you know what, I'm giving him a pass on that. Very well done.

What's nice about Dugan is that he isn't a superman. He makes mistakes, gets there too late, gets beat up and captured, he isn't all that good with guns. But he is strong, relentless, loyal, and quick thinking. He is helped by having contacts in the CIA, MI6, and wealthy corporate land. And then he meets Borgdonov and things get even better! Lots of sleazy bad guy to take out, intrigue, conspiracy, kidnapping, torture, bombing, and good old steadfast boots on the ground. There's also the probability of more sequels!

Russians are the really bad guys here, but also the best to have on your six.
