Publisher's summary

Imagine finding a glimmer of good news in a diagnosis of Alzheimer's. And imagine how that would change the outlook of the five million Americans who suffer from Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, not to mention their families, loved ones, and caretakers.

A neurologist who's been specializing in dementia and memory loss for more than 20 years, Dr. Gayatri Devi rewrites the story of Alzheimer's by defining it as a spectrum disorder - like autism, Alzheimer's is a disease that affects different people differently. She encourages people who are worried about memory impairment to seek a diagnosis, because early treatment will enable doctors and caregivers to manage the disease more effectively through drugs and other therapies.

Told through the stories of Dr. Devi's patients, The Spectrum of Hope is the kind of narrative medical writing that is gripping, humanizes the science, and offers equal parts practical advice and wisdom with skillful ease. But beyond the pleasures of great listening, it's a book that offers real hope.

Aging with Grace

Dr. Devi,

Being a women's health nurse practitioner, caring for a mother, age 78, who has been dx'd with Dementia, I wish you would have touched more on the care of loved ones who are in nursing homes. Many may not have a choice for home care of loved ones, so addressing, giving pearls of wisdom on how to best coordinate care & well-being in those settings would have been welcomed.

Overall, the book was filled with helpful information, encouragement and care. I can tell you love your profession and those you care for.

Thanks, Doc,

It is interesting to hear one professional’s insights on this subject. I think we all guess that such diseases do not always present in the same way. It is good to realize what a range of experiences patients can have.

Best to your canine office mates.

A seriously heartfelt Doctor - care taker.

I want to meet this doctor and talk with her as I find her very fascinating and brilliant on many levels of human, personal health care.
