Publisher's summary

He’s a man with a body under siege - and the willingness to proceed with a cure so miraculous all one can do is gasp - in this chilling story by New York Times bestselling author Adam Haslett.

After years of traditional treatments and therapies, Derrick still suffers from pain ineluctable enough that it has become his identity. Then he hears of an exclusive, very private New York clinic that promises relief. It comes highly recommended by a friend. The multisession remedy unfolds as a sensorial wonder that’s so illuminating it’s enough to bring tears to Derrick’s eyes. It’s all working so well. So unexpectedly well.

Adam Haslett’s The Remedy is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

Ummm

I knew when I was reading this that it wasn't as uplifting as it was appearing to be. It's a horror story. I'm hopeful, but I am not stupid. I was very disappointed in the story. There wasn't a lot of build up and no climax to the story at all. It just kind of went along. My honest judgement is that this would have been a better story if there had been more build up to the point of the story and more creepy parts. It's still an enjoyable read and I do fully recommend it.

Intriguing until the ending

This was well done. The narrator was good and built up the suspense as the mysterious story went on, but then the shock of the ending made me actually angry at the author. I know the author can do whatever he wants with it, but to end it like that just infuriated me. That’s the first time an ending or a book brought about such a strong negative emotion in me. If that’s what Mr. Haslett intended then he succeeded with me at least.

Ending wasn’t satisfying

The narrator was very good. The premise of the story was interesting, particularly for one such as myself who suffers from chronic physical and emotional pain BUT the ending left me feeling empty. We never fully understand if the main character suffers mental or physical pain. Once his “treatment” begins I felt as if the author glazed over the experience too quickly and left the us, the reader, and even the main character confused as to what actually took place. It left a myriad of unanswered questions, such as “why did she request the photos” “why did the man make the receptionist cry” “how could the doctor possibly ‘get away’ with her treatment” “why was the last step of the treatment supposed to be inevitable”? I gave it a four star rating because the author is an obviously strong writer and very good at his craft being he was able to hold my attention so firmly and make me look forward to the “big reveal” at the end. However, because of the aforementioned issues I couldn’t give it a 5. Mind you writing a short story is immensely more difficult than writing a full novel as one is forced to cram so much information and flesh out at least one character in a condensed space, so again I must applaud the job this author performed. I’m not familiar with him but I will look for a longer story of his to see if it was simply this format which caused him to miss the mark a bit.

The Con is More Like It

I didn't find this story interesting at all. Mostly psycho babble crap that wound up being another scam. Utter complete waste of my valuable time. Don't waste yours. The audio book version was just ok as well, narrator just droned on.

Good short story

This was nice to pass an hour away. I don’t regret listening to it, but wouldn’t say it was anything remarkable. It was free and included in my Amazon Prime Reading options. I will try the rest of the series since they are short.

Good, but a bit short

This is a wonderfully insightful psychological short story, but the brevity of time during which the story took place, and the scarcity of details made it a bit implausible. More information would have had to have been gathered from one of the characters in the story for the things that happened to have happened.

Ethical Nightmare

While I do understand what is being implied here, I think there have been a lot that has been left out in the story, it being a short story.

I liked the story but was a bit uncomfy at how it ended just like that. I suppose those who identify with the story would understand but still...

I don't think assisted suicide should be played lightly..
