Publisher's summary

He went on the road expecting the worst of America, but what if the worst of America was also in him? This is the unsettling story of a man in a midlife crisis and his unexpected awakening, by award-winning writer Emily Raboteau.

Poison-tongued film critic Reginald Wright is known for his creative insults and intolerance for the garbage culture, insufferable rudeness, and thoughtless racism of predictably common people. Now, against his better judgment, and with a marriage in crisis, he’s attempting a getaway in the Poconos that quickly fulfills his every low expectation. In fact, it’s becoming a nightmare. And that’s just what Reginald needs to wake up.

Emily Raboteau’s The Tangled Woods is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

Amazing story n I really loved the ending!

I felt many different things while listening to this story, which told me just how good the author really is. But the ending is what really got me. I've never listened to an audiobook twice, but I feel like that might change bc of this one.

Definitely tangled!

There could have been more finesse with the narration; more patience & eloquence. And yet, l was there to the end. Not sure where the story was going, but absolutely having to be wherever it ended. Savvy, biting & unexpected.
Read it, listen to it & share it with your friends. And maybe your enemies, too.

Hmmm

I love the realistic touch. I also love the real issues being thrown in to provide some authenticity. I'm just not sure overall what the overarching point of the story was. It was a pretty amazing story with pretty amazing potential. I'm just not sure I can say it met that potential fully. As always, this is just my opinion. I'm sure many others will see it otherwise. I do recommend the book.

Good story, but characters were clichés

The narrator was good. I found the characters rather annoying. Parents were either overprotective or let kids do what they wanted. Not my type of story.

Small hiccups but good

If I had allowed, what I believe to have been comments from fragile readers who are not from any minority class, then I would have missed out on a decent story that was an interesting read and somewhat thought provoking. Granted I can see why some readers found it to be jumpy without a “plot”, but I would argue that the plot was subtle. Not as refined as “Friday Black” by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, but the elements were there and made it an enjoyable short story.

There were two hiccups in the post editing, that were a bit off putting, but this was not the fault of the author nor the narrator. I don’t feel like it took anything away from the story. If you are a reader with a mind of your own I would encourage you to give this short story a try. And if you are a reader who liked “Friday Black”, Netflix’s “Black Mirror”, or Liquid TV from early MTV then you would enjoy this little read. A pallet cleanser in-between heavy novels.
