Publisher's summary

A shocking and hopeful account of one woman's extraordinary courage to face her past and embrace truth in order to help others find hope and healing.

In The Relentless Courage of a Scared Child, Tana Amen shares her incredible story of transformation - of growing up in poverty, a bullied latch-key kid raised on sugary cereal and junk food, to becoming a world-renowned food and fitness expert.

Her challenging past of neglect, poverty, sexual abuse, thyroid cancer, and bouts of anxiety and depression set her on a path to find healing. Through her remarkable journey, we see more clearly the light that can shine through our own broken places and ultimately heal us: body, mind, and soul.

At once tragic and heartwarming, Tana’s story integrates cutting-edge psychology and proven wellness techniques from the Amen Clinics in a moving exploration of the healing available to each one of us, no matter the pain in our past.

“What a journey! With in-your-face honesty, Tana reveals how she was able to turn her pain into purpose. For anyone who has been faced with unspeakable loss, this message is so important.” (Jay Shetty, number one New York Times best-selling author of Think Like a Monk, storyteller, purpose coach, and former monk)

Courage and strength

I can relate to this book, as I am a recovering addict, a professional, and a mother of an addict… And also a survivor of childhood trauma… This story is one of relentless courage for sure… It has inspired me to do more work on the inside!

Beautiful memoir

Tana managed to tell her story with honesty and humor. Although her story is unique to her, as mine is to me, I was able to hear her message through the telling of her stories. She is an inspiration!! Her ability to forgive herself is by far the biggest take away and a necessary gift for growth.

I gave this book and overall 5, but the story a 4!

I loved this book overall. I gave the story a 4 because it is too real. It was so real that I was forced to face my own childhood. During different chapters I had a similar memory that came to mind. It was hard because I had those
memories put away, safely. I finished the book today, finished it with tears of hope. Tears that I have held back for years. This book has helped me believe in forgiveness and going forward. I am opening it again to reread it, and believe in me and beginning again.

Great story that I really enjoyed listen to

The story is extremely profound, inspiring, it helped me to look at so many things at different perspective. Besides, the narrator is really wonderful, the way she read it is unsurpassed

accidentally appreciated

Having finished the most recent book in a Fantasy series by Brandon Sanderson (that interestingly includes characters with mental illness) I searched my wish list for another book to listen to. I had been building up this list after researching resources and programs to help my family, my business, and various other self help types of things, and anytime I came across a book title, I searched it in audible to read later. I briefly scanned the various titles and thought this one sounded like something that might help my child who might have anxiety. It was not at all what I expected and I can't remember why I put it in my wish list or where I saw the title. The story is heartbreaking, but rewarding. It is insiteful into the life of someone who faced a lot of adversity and trials and pulled through, with strength she gain on her own and help from her amazing husband. She ultimately turned her experience around and used it to help others. I am now to going to find out more about the Amen couple and their research in hopes that it can help my family.

authentic

The narrator was a bit overly-snarky but aside from that, the book itself is worth listening to. I have nothing but respect for Tana Amen.
