Publisher's summary

A thrilling narrative of survival amid the violence and chaos following the catastrophic destruction of America's power grid.

As massive solar flares bombard the Earth, an intense electromagnetic pulse brings down America’s long-neglected power grid. The electric age ends and anarchy descends as desperate citizens panic. Artie Drager, whose dream Bahamas vacation turns into every parent’s worst nightmare, finds himself stranded thousands of miles from his home and only daughter, Jessica. As the horrible aftermath unfolds, Jessica is frantic about her father lost somewhere at sea. But first she must save herself right at home. Gangs of looters are raping, creating havoc, and taking everything in sight. Jessica is forced to bug out from the crumbling streets of New Orleans into the desolate and dangerous backwaters of Mississippi while her father sets sail on a trackless ocean a thousand miles away.

This compelling, fast-paced, action-adventure novel has listeners riveted and uneasy, questioning whether they would have what it takes to survive in an America lit only by firelight.

Good story bad narrator

would love to listen to the sequel but Mike Vendetti is too painful to subject myself to. Surely a better narrator could have made this book a memorable experience

Not bad! (Except the narration)

This was an interesting grid down story for the most part. It’s not just a grid down scenario but a mystery within a grid down scenario. I liked the story but the time frames don’t match up at all. If the two story’s came together in real time it would have been off by about two weeks according to the time references which were given throughout the book. That was a bit annoying but I got over it. The parts I didn’t like was the incessantly filler conversations that took place in the middle of the drama where we learned about nature and history over and over. It’s not that those things don’t interest me it’s just that I wanted to skip chapters when that happened. Overall I would listen to more from this author.

In other news, I’m sure Mike Vendetti is a nice man but he’s a horrible narrator as I’ve mentioned in other reviews and to be honest if I would have noticed he was the narrator I may have passed on this book. He mumbles, mispronounces basic words and puts pauses in where they don’t belong, as if he’s turning the page in the middle of a sentence. He also can’t do a Caribbean accent if his life depended on it making for cringeworthy chapters. And he STILL can’t pronounces the word “foliage” and uses “da” occasionally for “the”. Ugh!

wonderful book, can't wait to read #2

good character development, maturely written with intelligent story plot. I also recommend Mark goodwin as a post apocalypse and emp. Noone is really on par with him so I was very happy to find this excellent story! VERY WELL DONE
