Publisher's summary

The Pocket Learner is an educational system that the author developed to help her child with special educational needs. The system became an international multi-award-winning innovation, and has been extended to families across the globe to help their children build vocabulary, learn to read, and count. The author realized that several factors needed to be in place for her child to thrive in contemporary society.

First, she had to learn the hard way, battling every step of the way to access resources, therapies, and care support for her child. In addition, she had to find ways to engage her child in the home. This led her to develop the Special Education Advancement Toolkit: an inspirational, educational model and guide for parents of children struggling in their early years, or who have been diagnosed with special educational needs. It incorporates The Pocket Learner as the main resource in the toolkit.

The structure is built on six principles represented by the acronyms hope, faith, gentle(ness), joy, love, and peace. The framework revolves around the child: the star, fruit of the womb endowed with innate abilities and gifts. The toolkit covers the range of roles, responsibilities, and activities that families and other relevant parties must implement.

The program consists of six P's:

  • Perception: The journey into HOPE technique.
  • Preparation: The accelerated FAITH roadmap.
  • Participation: The GENTLE approach solution.
  • Progress: The JOY generator toolkit.
  • Patience: The LOVE game strategy.
  • Potential: The PEACE promotion formula.

Zig Ziglar said, “When you put faith, hope, and love together, you can raise positive kids in a negative world.” When you add gentleness, joy, and peace, you raise a balanced, confident child armed with the mindset, skills, and competencies to take their appropriate place in society.

Informative and packed full of knowledge

Lots of great information which is carefully structured. Our son is in a SEN school and we wanted to gain more information to help us understand and better support him. This audible is packed full of wonderful knowledge on special needs education and is highly recommended. The love game chapter was especially great and was a major area we needed more help on. Highly recommended.

Absolutely Awesome Resource!

I had the great fortune to listen to Andrea Campbell's "The Pocket Learner Special Needs Education", what a great resource!!
I have two family members that are special needs and I wish this book had been available 15 years ago when our family started on this journey. Campbell brings you and inspirational and empowering guide to advocating for the caregiver as well as the child. This book will give you a roadmap to the crazy world of special education. Covering broadly the different disabilities and the best way to advocate the system. Campbell doesn't stop there, she gives you access to support services, strategies, and tools to help those with special needs to reach their potential. I would give this 6 stars if I could!

Valuable and Creative Guide and Resource!

As an educator, I was delighted to find this book and found it to be a valuable, relatable guide. I know from experience with parents and caregivers that navigating the care of a special needs child can be a scary and overwhelming journey. This book provides abundant practical suggestions and guidance. It is written with deep love and care for the diverse experiences of all humans. Each section has an acronym to guide the main actions and considerations making them easy to remember. For example, Chapter 6 is called Potential: The PEACE promotion formula - each letter in PEACE stands for a part of the toolkit. I plan to recommend this book to parents and caregivers. I especially enjoyed the chapter highlighting famous people who have disabilities; children with special needs can be inspired by these stories and enjoy them together with their families and caregivers. The narration is excellent.
