Publisher's summary

Can murder ever be justified?

When a prominent judge is found stabbed to death on Valentine's weekend in what appears to be a crime of passion, homicide detective Maggie Novak knows her skills are about to be put on trial.

Bobby Russell is everybody's favorite judge, and at first Maggie is hard-pressed to find anyone with anything bad to say about him, let alone someone harboring a hatred so deep that they will kill him over it. But as she peels back the layers of his life, and the eyewitness to his murder goes missing, Maggie is faced with the very real prospect that beneath the judge's perfect surface deadly undercurrents lurk.

To uncover the truth, Maggie must first expose the judge's darkest secret, one that reaches deep inside his private life and into the death of his daughter.

A child's life hangs in the balance and a coldblooded killer is at large. Will the scales of justice tip in Maggie's favor in time for her to save the day?

Worst narration I’ve ever experienced

I don’t review books. I feel it’s subjective. However, this narrator is one of the worst I’ve experienced. I kept listening due to my inability to just stop and not know how the story ends. The first two books in this series had a much better narrator. Why change? I’m am in constant pursuit of a good story with a good female narrator WITHOUT a British accent! Anyway, this narrator needs some training or a new job. Sorry!

Great

I really enjoyed this story and the narrator does a wonderful job. This is part of a series, but I had not previously read any before this and didn't feel lost at all. I liked that it wasn't a quick guess of who did it as sometimes I'll read in mystery books.

Great story but reads like a very detailed script

A prominent Florida judge get stabbed in his mansion. A whodunit-and-why story but not a straightforward one.The synopsis was different with a twisted compelling mystery.

Helen Gordon does a great job narrating what can be qualified as a fast paced movie script, with tons of irrelevant details and a female main character that oscillate between brilliant and clueless.
If you’re not too concerned a reader, it is a great book.If details bog you down you might get frustrated by the unnecessary conversations blabbing not advancing the plot.
The perpetrator is easily identified from Chapter 3 on, the ‘why’ keeps the reader engaged to the end of the story.

This book is the third installment of the Maggie Novak series. It is a standalone that can be read independently.

Enjoyed the book

I enjoyed the book, but not the narration. The narrator was very monotone, and sounded as if she was in a can & just reading without any emotion. I did listen to all of the book, but wanted it to just be over already because of the narrator. But glad I listened to it all, very surprised to find out who done it.

Great Mystery

Keith's storylines are always filled with lots of twists and turns leading the reader to question the suspects available. This story has a couple of really strange developments that will keep you reading in the pursuit of who did it!

Another great installment but not so great audio

I loved the previous Maggie Novak books! I didn't pinpoint the exact ending, but I was in the ballpark of it! Still it was enjoyable to hear these characters again!

I had to take a a couple stars away because while I enjoyed the story, the narrator was not doing it for me. I loved the previous narrator for the first 2 books and was just used to her, so hearing the new one took me out of the story at first. I did get used to her and I do feel like she got better, but there were quite a few things that stuck out. At first she was pretty monotone at first and seemed to loosen up later on, but through out her audio recording, you could hear background noises, ( seemed like it was done in a not very well treated room) at one point I heard a computer notification, a lot of mouth sounds! Not sure if I'm just sensitive to those so they stuck out more to me, but In other books I don't notice them as much as I did with this audio. I do think she is a good narrator once you warm up to her.

Overalls it was still a good book, I just wish the audio recording was bit more polished like the previous 2 books.

Love Keith Houghton!

Great story as I have come to expect from this author. Can’t wait to read the next one! However, I intensely disliked the narrator. There is no way to tell when character dialog changes. Not much inflection in her voice. I will remember to avoid books she narrates.

NARRATION

The narrator from the first 2 books was much better. This narrator very monotone. Doesn't make the story as good as the first 2
