Publisher's summary

Are you, a loved one, or a friend still suffering from a health issue after you have exhausted traditional healthcare options? Do you constantly feel fatigued or feel something is wrong but can’t figure out why? Do you wake up multiple times at night or have sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome? Are you overweight and always hungry and wonder why?

You might be surprised to learn all these problems may be the result of a deficiency of one substance that has been misunderstood since its discovery in 1939. That substance is vitamin D3.

While it is called a vitamin, D3 is really a hormone. It was first used to treat a childhood bone disease called rickets. Nearly all the research on the benefits of vitamin D3 has been done at doses that are 80 times lower than the optimal doses described in this audiobook. This groundbreaking audiobook is your opportunity to regain your health quickly, safely, and easily. In The Optimal Dose, Judson Somerville reveals how vitamin D3 saved his own life when all else failed and explains how this essential vitamin is key to finding answers to your own health questions and challenges.

Hit it on the head with being resilient to virus

I got this book as the result of reading/learning what I could about the link between Covid-19 infection and the seriousness of the sickness. There is a link -- several studies have shown that low Vit D correlates closely with ICU admission, the need for ventilation, and so forth. From what I've read, there have also been some interventional studies that have shown Vit D supplementation (through means that quickly raise the active form in the body) during the sickness can help curb many of the problems. Vit D seems to be an undervalued and essential nutrient!

After reading the book I started taking 5000 IU a day. Fearing that I might be overdoing it, I went and had it tested. I was at 21! That is after a MONTH at 5000 IU....which is at a level that my doctor says I'm gunna overdose?

It is true there is some bad information about this Vitamin out there, and after chasing down several of the peer reviewed links Dr. Somerville posted, I can see he has science backing his claims. I found it MOST interesting to see that the upper limit of D3 was set at 100, but that hyperkalemia doesn't start until much much higher.

I wonder what my body will feel like when I get out of the trench at 21? We shall see.....

This is a good read. I recommend the book.

Excellent research into Vitamin D

I've been aware of the unique nature of Vitamin D for nearly 10 years, it's amazing. Dr. Somerville presents thorough research that answered many questions I still had. I feel I have a much better understanding of Vitamin D after reading this relatively short book.

Eye-Opening revelations about what vitamin D does

Wow - I thought I knew all about vitamin D3 but this adds a decidedly new level of it for me. I've been maintaining a higher vitamin D3 (D3) blood level for over 10 years. In that time, I've only had 2 minor colds - and both of those happened when I had been OFF the D3 for a few months.

But ‘Winter Syndrome’, which Dr. Somerville has named this state of chronic deficiency, is much broader and deeper than just immune system support. In reflection, I think my whole family has had this - we just didn’t know it.

I assumed our current D3 dosing guidelines and limits were based on rigorous clinical data. Turns out much of it has been broadly estimated - and often too low, ‘just to be safe’, which treated it on par with potentially toxic drugs.

But here’s the thing: D3 has a very LOW potential for toxicity. In fact, all potential for toxicity lies in how much Vitamin D3 is in the blood (not the daily dose) and not until you reach 300 ng/ml. Most of the world’s vitamin D-deficient population would be lucky to have a level of 20ng. And it can take many months, if not years, of super high dosing to get anywhere near that 300 ng threshold. Checking your D3 level 1x or 2x a year should help you maintain whatever level you decide on.

NARRATION: Clear, crisp, and consistently modulated throughout the whole book.
