Publisher's summary

Wynsdown, 1949.

In the small Somerset village of Wynsdown, Charlotte Shepherd is happily married and now feels settled in her adopted home after arriving from Germany on the Kindertransport as a child during the war.

Meanwhile, the squire's fighter-pilot son, Felix, has returned to the village with a fiancée in tow. Daphne is beautiful and charming...and is harboring secrets. After meeting during the war, Felix knows some of Daphne's past, but she has worked hard to conceal what could unravel her carefully built life.

For Charlotte, too, a dangerous past is coming back in the shape of fellow refugee bad boy Harry Black. Forever bound by their childhoods, she will always care for him, but his return disrupts the village quiet, and it's not long before gossip spreads.

The war may have ended, but for these girls, trouble is only just beginning.

It went down hill about 1/2 way through

I had loved the book before this.

The first half or so was really good, though I could have done without the return of Harry Black.

Then once the Fox Hunt took place it really bottomed out.

Abrupt ending

Narration and story weren’t as good as the original in the series. Sequels rarely compare but the ending was just wrong. It seemed like the author had a deadline or a limited number of words and just neatly tied up all loose ends in 500 words.

Mixed

Disappointed with the narrator,😞 she was difficult to listen to but as it was a sequel and I enjoyed first book I wanted to see what happened to adult Charlotte and loved the narrator to first book.

2nd book very good

The narrator was hard to listen to at first but once I got into the story she was quite good. Good second book, it left me wanting more. I totally recommend this book after listening to the first book. I can’t wait for the next one to come out. I didn’t think the title really fit but that’s not taking away from the story. Loved it loved it!

Fantastic finish!

For those who met Charlotte, Billy and their friends and family, this is a wonderful continuation of their stories. I laughed, cried - wept really - and celebrated right along with them. Well, written and worth the read!

Good story

Did not really care for the narrator. Didn’t think it need to get so explicit about Daffany’s affair

Not as good as the 1st

I’m glad there was a second volume as I was curious what happened to the characters. However, this one wasn’t as exciting as the 1st volume. Also, the 1st volume narrator was excellent. However, this narrator was very difficult to listen too. I almost gave up on listening a few times, but my curiosity of how it would end outweighed.

Did not measure up to first book

I felt like the author got bored writing it so just went off on a totally unsatisfying and abrupt ending. I still can’t believe how it ended. Too bad as it really had a strong beginning and could have had an amazing ending. I feel cheated!

good overall, but some loose ends

overall I really enjoyed it, but this is the 3rd or 4th of Costello's I've read and it's the first to describe multiple sex scenes. that makes for uncomfortable listening when others are around! also, Harry faded and his story ended, but I didn't feel it really wrapped him up. I hoped he had a happy ending, because he had been just a child too.

So so

I finished the book but like other reviewers it was a struggle. Not net as good as the first book. Did not like the narration- not sure why I hung in there as the ending was so abrupt and unsatisfying
