Publisher's summary

Captain Maddox is marooned on a harsh alien planet 6000 light years from Earth. He struggles alone, desperate to survive, knowing that failure will forever cost him his wife and daughter.

But there’s more at stake than Maddox’s life. In the planet is a relic of unimaginable power and the secret to the Builders’ demise. The Mastermind has sent Iris, his human lover, and a team of intelligent canine killers, to retrieve the relic for his greatness.

Here, in a strangely dampened star system, the crew of Victory faces its cruelest challenge, battling entities thousands of years old to end a war begun long ago.

The Lost Relic is book 17 in the Lost Starship series, a star-spanning saga of deadly space war and planetary struggles as told by millions-best-selling author Vaughn Heppner.

"Reminds me of"...Junior High writing class

One reviewer described the writing style in this book as "sophomoric". I disagree; it is pre-adolescent. Pre-teen is certainly its target audience, but kids books are OK, if you recognize they're is not supposed be great literature, or even good SciFi...😏

Sophomoric at best.

I’ve been joyed all of the previous books, but this one seems like it was written by a high school student, trying to impress someone if they can follow a story. The dialogue with terrible. The characters were inept and shallow. Nowhere near the quality of most of the previous books. I’m not sure what happened, but it doesn’t seem like this was written by the same person.

He’s still got it!

I really appreciate this series. Honestly VH could continue writing these books forever and I’d keep buying them.

How to ruin a great story

This was the 17th book I've listened to in this series. The story has been compelling enough to keep me coming back.
BUT...
1. There is not one single charming / like-able character in the entire series. None of them have a sense of humor.

2. You could play Lost Starship Bingo with squares for:
-Maddox says he misses Metta (sp?) and his "precious" Jewel
-Someone prays
- Christian metaphysics is referenced
-A character reminds another of their military rank
-Characters bicker over trivial matters
-Maddox says "I am Captain Maddox"
-etc

I really had a struggle getting through this book. It is just not a fun listen once we get into the interpersonal dialogues. Hell, even the internal character monologues are a slog to wade through.
The overall story arc is the only compelling feature of the series.
I'm might very well be done with all things Heppner (this and his AI series) unless he learns how to write like-able characters.
