Story
When two strangers are linked by a mail-in DNA test, it’s an answered prayer- that is, for one half sister. For the other, it will dismantle everything she knows to be true. But as they step into the unfamiliar realm of sisterhood, the roles will reverse in ways no one could have foreseen. Caroline lives a full, happy life - thriving career, three feisty children, enviable marriage, and a close-knit extended family. She couldn’t have scripted it better. Except for one thing: She’s about to discover her fundamental beliefs about them all are wrong.

Story
When a group of neighborhood women gathers, wine in hand, around a fire pit where their backyards meet one Saturday night, most of them are just ecstatic to have discovered that their baby monitors reach that far. It's a rare kid-free night, and they're giddy with it. They drink too much, and the conversation turns personal. By Monday morning, one of them is gone. Everyone knows something about everyone else in the quirky small Ohio town of Yellow Springs, but no one can make sense of the disappearance.

Publisher's summary
An instant USA Today bestseller.
A woman in search of a new beginning is put to the test in ways she never imagined in an empowering and provocative page-turner by the author of Not That I Could Tell.
Katie’s divorce was, in a word, humiliating. So when her friend Bess offers a fresh start—a resident caretaking job at a nature preserve—Katie accepts. No matter that she’s not exactly a “nature person.” How hard can it be?
But from day one, something feels off. Katie’s new farmhouse looks as if the last caretaker barely moved out at all. When a frantic, terrified woman arrives late at night, expecting a safe place to hide, it’s clear caretaking involves way more than Katie bargained for.
Suddenly, Katie is no longer sure who she can trust: the brooding groundskeeper, the daily regulars—hikers, dog walkers, bird-watchers, photographers—even Bess.
As Katie digs deeper for clues in what the last caretaker left behind, she must discover courage she never knew she had—and decide how much she’ll risk to do the right thing.
Critic reviews
“Of immense appeal and interest to fans of deftly crafted novels with the themes of family life intermixed with elements of suspense and apprehension, and unreservedly recommended…ably and effectively narrated by Reba Buhr.”—Midwest Book Review
“Strawser’s latest fast-paced page-turner (following The Next Thing You Know) grabs readers at the start and doesn’t let go. For fans of Sally Hepworth and Liane Moriarty.”—Library Journal
“Strawser presents a fresh premise and compelling plot. The twists are unexpected, and Katie is pulled along through the adventure until she finds the courage to stand up for herself.”—Booklist

Olivia Strauss is turning thirty-nine. No major milestone. She still considers herself young. At least young enough to assume she has decades (emphasis on the plural) to check the unchecked boxes of her life’s to-do list. Ballerina? Too late. But not too late for poet. Or for reigniting the romantic spark in her marriage, spending more quality time with her son, switching careers, learning to cook, or even dyeing her hair a bright bohemian pink. She’ll get to that one. There’s time—until Olivia’s best friend, Marian, gives her a birthday present she could have lived without.

This was a fairly good read, keeping my interest around the next corner. Descriptiveness was good, allowing me to create a visual in my mind.
There was a a lot of build up but more story line around each corner, and I kept waiting for more drama throughout.

I waited anxiously for this book but...
I really enjoyed some of this authors previous books but I frankly found this novel to be very convoluted --- it felt as though she tried too hard to make the story happen vs. letting it developing organically or logically. I really wanted to love it but I just couldn't nor can I whole heartedly recommend it but maybe you will feel differently about it.

Great read
I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. It had me wishing there are actually groups like this to help in situations that need this help. Touches on sad and emotional (also touchy) subjects but these are real situations going on around us on the daily. Brings in-site to this like this. It’s a page turner and worth the read for sure.

I enjoyed the voice acting very much. I found the author’s character development of Katie and others very interesting.
No dislikes come to mind. I enjoyed it the story, characters and voice. I will listen again.
