Publisher's summary
The pause-resisting follow-up to acclaimed thriller Two Girls Down features the tenacious PI Alice Vega and her electric partnership with Max Caplan, as they follow a shocking murder investigation to it’s even more shocking conclusion.
On the outskirts of San Diego, the bodies of two young women are discovered. They have no names, no IDs, but one of the Jane Does holds a note bearing the name, “Alice Vega”. The police and FBI reach out to Vega, a private investigator known for finding the missing. Fearing the possibility of a human trafficking ring, Vega enlists the help of her one-time partner, former cop Max “Cap” Caplan.
Despite a case with so few leads, Alice Vega is a powerful woman whose determination is matched only by her intellect, and, along with her partner Cap, she will stop at nothing to find the Janes’ killers before it is too late.
Louisa Luna is writing new classics of crime fiction, and her partnership of Vega and Cap is rightfully joining the pantheon of the most memorable thrillers.
Critic reviews
“An intricately plotted, adrenaline-fueled conspiracy thriller...Luna's latest entertains while subverting gender stereotypes and confronting the politics of immigration.” (Kirkus Reviews)
"The Janes has everything - a plot ripped from the headlines and darkly twisted, explosive action, original characters, a dash of humor, and memorable settings. The story grabs the reader like a steel band of cold tension tightening with each new development. Investigators Alice Vega and Max Caplan deserve a long career with many more cases ahead." (Anne Hillerman, author of the New York Times best-selling Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito mysteries)
"Lead character Alice Vega is sensational - I want to see lots more of her." (Lee Child)

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Very solid PI procedural
This is a very procedural mystery, ie you know basically what happened early on and the later developments are just nailing down details. But the writing and characters are good enough that I really enjoyed it. Plus the action is really compelling.

EXCEPTIONAL
The author has presented harsh reality in an exceptionally engaging format that is impossible to put down. I find myself craving a sequel while feeling overwhelmed
and exhausted by the ugly evilness depicted in this haunting novel. The narration was also spot on so that I felt myself to be a participant in the storyline.

Louisa Luna Can REALLY Write
I came across this series by accident, and what a treasure it is. I have binged listened to books 1 & 2 and about to start book 3. After that I eagerly await book 4's release in June.
I totally dig Alice Vega and Max Kaplan.
Luna combines action, mystery, grit and rawness along with a tender character development. Give this series a listen. It is outstanding.
Thank you Louisa Luna for giving us Vega, Kap and, of course, Nell!!!
