It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement, of which Kempis was a member. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read Christian devotional work next to the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. Its popularity was immediate, and it was printed 745 times before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book has been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ at the time.

Timeless Spiritual Classic; Annoying Reading
This is a timeless classic that we should all read over and over again; unfortunately the performance in this version has a fatal flaw.
While the reader's voice is pleasant, for some reason it was decided that he would basically recite the title page of the book at the beginning of every section, which is incredibly annoying. What this means is that if you wanted to listen for your 30 minute commute, for example, you'd hear the reader rattle off the name of the book, the author's name, the translator's name, and the reader's name 3-5 times.
