Publisher's summary

Glamorous messiah or charlatan? A mask of beauty hides deadly secrets in #1 New York Times and Amazon Charts bestselling author Gregg Olsen’s mesmerizing novel of suspense.

In the Pacific Northwest, detective Lindsay Jackman is investigating the murder of a young journalist found at the bottom of a ravine. Lindsay soon learns that the victim was writing an exposé. Her subject: a charismatic wellness guru who’s pulled millions into her euphoric orbit...

To hear Marnie Spellman tell it, when she was a child, a swarm of bees lifted her off the ground and toward the sunlight, illuming her spiritual connection with nature—an uncanny event on which Marnie built a cosmetics empire and became a legend, a healer, and the queen of holistic health and eternal beauty. In her inner circle is an intimate band of devotees called the Hive. They share Marnie’s secrets of success—including one cloaked in darkness for twenty years.

Determined to uncover the possibly deadly mysteries of the group, Lindsay focuses her investigation on Marnie and the former members of the Hive, who are just as determined to keep Lindsay from their secrets as they are to maintain their status.

Excellent book!

Greg Olsen does an excellent job with his books! He has written many true crime which I am sure has helped him create such realistic fictional crime novels. I always look forward to his work. This one was creepy and frightening to me because of how realistic it was. Many groups are formed from people whose influence ruin their lives. Don’t miss out on this one! The narrator did a great job also!

Great story, worth your time.

Thought this one was really good. It had an easy to follow storyline with solid character development. Couple of nice twists and turns but nothing that doesn't make sense, quite a bit of foreshadowing in the first chapter. Narration was great, lots of inflection and voice variance between characters. Would recommend if you are in to crime drama.

Well- hmmm

This had such cool potential—The concept and”hive”.
There were too many characters to follow. Wish there was focus on the murder in the beginning. That went cold. Took forever to tell this story. I kept wanting to stop the book but plowed through. Was ok - was missing something ??

Loved it and seems to be a good book slow in the middle and upsetting in the end

Didn't See That Coming

I really enjoyed how the author unfolds the story. it is complex and compelling. Every time I thought the mystery was solved, there was yet another layer.

Good character development in quite a bit of social commentary, especially with respect to male female social roles. I'm not sure why it was necessary that all the empowered women, apart from the protagonist, we're necessarily sinister.

My only dig is that there are quite a few factual errors with respect to bees, a primary theme of the novel. Just a little research by the author would have made this book even better.

great read.

Great read with good twists. The police officer, Lindsey, loses her partner, Alan. If just so happens, that it is connected with the case she is working on. But it isn't revealed until the end. A girl is found dead. It is connected to a case from two decades earlier. Involved, are women whom follow an extraordinary lady named Marine. She runs a farm with bees. It makes lotions for your face and whatnot. The women are mesmerized by Marine. Read this tale to find out why many people's lives end up taken.

Boring

Overly dramatic and boring. The narrator isn't great. I think I'll have to jump ship and try a different book.

Mean girls

I really tried to stick with this but totally lost interest half way through. Stuck it out until about 2/3 through and cut my losses.
